Here's the deal, my clutch pedal is extremely soft all of a sudden. It started 2 days ago. I checked the reservoir and it was a little low so I refilled it. It got better. As of this morning I will not drive it because its to the point where it wont disengage the drive anymore. I push the clutch all the way in and it is stiff going in but if I keep it in more than a second it looses tension and the drive engages. I can have the pedal all the way to the ground and the truck will drive away. I feel like it might be compressing and then the fluid is slipping by somehow. I dont know if it would be the master cylinder or the slave cylinder. Please help. I have a 250 mile drive in a two weeks and I need to be able to fix it by then. I dont want to put a lot of money into this either because I will be getting a 2002 Prerunner in a month and trading the 99.

    Any help will be welcome.

If it starts to build pressure & then looses it, I'd say its the clutch master/slave cylinder

I figured that, but which one. Or should I just replace both?

you should always do both if its not too much $$ I reckon, I know if I did just one, bigger than shit I'd be back under it replacing the other....;)

It's nice to know I'm not only one to whom this happens...

OP, if you haven't already done so, you should try bleeding the clutch (similar to bleeding the brakes), to ensure you don't have any air in the lines. 4WD is probably right, but bleeding the lines won't cost you more than a few ounces of brake fluid and few minutes of your time.

I had this issue with mine at one time. I would stop at a stoplight with the truck in gear with the clutch engaged and all of a sudden the truck would start rolling. I drove like this for about two weeks before I found time to work on it. I would just have to tell myself to pull the truck in neutral at any stop I would make, when I could go again, I would push the clutch ina nd put it in gear quickly and take off. lol......... it sucked and was very very dangerous in terms of hitting someone in the rear end while I was stopped. My pedal would sometimes not come back up and I literally had to pull it up with my foot. I ended up changing out the master cylinder and it fixed the issue. But check your slave cylinder first to make sure you aren't leaking there. Its definately either your master cylinder bleeding by or a faulty slave cylinder.

I forgot that you mentioned that you wanted to know which part might be defective....... I'm going with your master cylinder since that is what was faulty on my truck. Hope this helps.

The Master cylinder goes bad more often on these trucks.

I would try and bleed the system first, and if that doens't help, go ahead and replace both the slave and master. It wont hurt to replace both, and more than likely both are getting pretty old anyways.

Marlin Crawler sells some quality Japanese units on their site for a good price. Just avoid autozone and advanced auto units because they dont last long. I am on my second autozone master cyl in a year. Will be getting a marlin crawler unit after this one takes a dump.

You can also rebuild your slave cylinder, outlined in the link in my signature.
