Help Wiring Auxiliary Reverse Lights

I was hoping some of yall that have more experience in wiring and such could help me with some of my questions I have about wiring up some auxiliary reverse lights. I know I am just a teenager that doesn't know much about anything when it comes to stuff like this, that's why I joined this site and why I'm asking for yalls help.

They're very cheap so if they get smashed they will be easy to replace.

What I want to do is use an on/off/on switch so that i can run these lights in reverse and also be able to turn them on whenever I need to, along with having an off position.

So which switch would suit my needs? and how do I wire it up?

Now for the area that the real help is needed. I think I've read through every thread about wiring auxiliary reverse lights on every Toyota forum out there. Having said that, they might as well be in a foreign language to me.

I know I will need to use a relay and possibly a diode?
What size wire do I need to use?
How do I ground them properly without blowing a fuse?
I also don't know how to read any diagrams
What does the 87, 86, 85, and 30 mean?
What if I don't have an auxiliary fuse panel?

If someone could help me out and break down this diagram for me and just give me a step by step of how to wire these lights it will be greatly appreciated!



As I said I am completely clueless and would really appreciate somebody helping me out and teaching me about wiring/ working on my truck!

One answer.. You don't have an extra fuse block unless you order it and add it yourself.

2nd answer... I know i might have done it the wrong way but i bought some cheap $10 lights from walmart and spliced them in directly to the reverse light power wire. Then i grounded them separately and splice them in separately.. They work great but it would be smarter to use a relay!

I was thinkin about just splicing into the reverse lights but i kind of want the convenience of being able to use them whenever i need them, not just in reverse. if i cant figure it out I may just go with that route though

i'm the one who drew that diagram. the auxiliary lights are wired to the stock reverse lights. i wanted the lights to turn on when the truck was put in reverse, but i also wanted to use the lights independently... that's the purpose of the diode. current can only flow in one direction threw a diode. that also explains why i have two power sources. when the oem switch that i used is pressed, the stock reverse lights won't come on when the auxiliary lights are used. i'll try to explain better if you need me to.

So since I don't have an auxiliary fuse box i would put an in-line fuse on the wires that come from the 30 and 85 on the relay that connect to the positive and negative on the battery?

Also I was planning on using an on/off/on switch. Will this work the same way you have drawn it up on the diagram or does the way youve drawn it up have the aux reverse lights come on automatically when you put it in reverse, then when you push the switch in the aux. reverse lights come on independently?

sorry if that sounds really confusing. Also what did you connect the switch to for the ignition power source?

I hope this helps! Can you solder and heat shrink wires? Don't just wrap wire splices in electrical tape!

 

Thanks that definitely helps. I now undrestand the relay, in-line fuse, and the grounding.

My original plan with the on/off/on switch was one on position allows the lights to turn on when in reverse, the other on would allow me to use the lights whenever and the off would be off at all times. The way you've drawn it though is much more simple.

If it isnt too much of a hassle could you go to the link above and find the type of switch I would need to use?

I feel fairly confident that between my dad and me, we can solder and heat shrink the wires together.

If you could find out the location in the fuse panel and possibly get a picture that would be awesome.

I know im probably asking a lot but I really appreciate all the info you've given me and I already feel a lot more confident with this project!

any switch is capable of working. figure out which switch you want to use and i can draw you a quick diagram, to help you out through the process.

 

I used the reverse light wire on the trailer harness, center wire if you are so equipped.

I modified your diagram to what I thought would be correct from what yall have told me. Does this look right? That black box is the in-line fuse

that diagram is exactly what i was goin to draw you. the switch will work, no doubts. im not exactly sure how to wire it up tho, without looking at it. it's probably pretty straight forward. you're goin to have to splice it into the stock switch wiring to work in unison.

I used the wiring diagram in post number 64. I used a SPDT switch.
