Well, I got a quote today

So today, I got a quote for a new double din head unit.

I didn't mind the $600 for the head unit, but shortly after I got nailed with "we don't deal with xm here you have to get sirius" I was like ok, how much is that going to cost me? I got a reply of $400 for the module and $200 for the labour. So I said how much all in then? He tallied it up.

$600 - Clarion Head Unit
$400 - Sirius module
$1000 - Labour


So I don't think I am going that route. I am going to a different audio place.

do you guys have any suggestions of what head unit I should get because I was pressured into a Clarion double din deck and he said everything else was trash.

I would say alpine pioneer kenwood.most place do free install when buying from them.I know bestbuy by me offers that.installs are really easy to do yourself.I'm sure someone here local could help you for some beer and lunch

 

In general the big 4, full-range, product houses are Alpine, Pioneer, Kenwood and Clarion.

IMO, at matching price points they are very competitive with each other.

 

Where are you located? How much do you want to pay? The total was $2000 on your last quote, it should not cost $1000 for labor. Maybe I am not reading that properly. I spent around $1300.00 for a head unit with the xm and sirius package and all new speakers. Labor was included and I got a good deal. That was with the wiring for the rear camera to be activated anytime.

 

You read right because 1k for parts and 1k for labour, I forgot to mention there great deal of $300-$400 per speaker, this includes labour though! And they said the speakers were "Decent"

Is there any guides or anything for the install? I am going to have to check out best buy now, but I don't really trust many of the people there..

 

Stereos are pretty easy to install if you have basic wiring skills. If you buy from crutchfield they give you the step by step instructions for your truck and pretty much everything you need. As far as deck goes its generally this

Alpine = sound quality
Pioneer = ipod control, ease of use, and pretty graphics
kenwood = a lil compromise of both graphics and sound quality (im running a kdc-x895, i used to always have alpines but didnt want to spend the money this time) just installed it on fri but pretty happy with it so far

clarion = used to be pretty good went really downhill over the last few years
jvc, dual, sony, jensen = cheap crap

at least check out prices on crutchfield before you buy anything, there not always the cheapest but there pretty close and it will show you that the xm or sirius units for just about any head unit are only about 100-120$

 

400 for a Sirius module is a rip off..............go to Sonic electronic and install it your self and save a grand.

 

They are trying to rip you off. I like to get my car audio from crutchfield.com, got my capacitor and head unit from there. If not from there, I go to a local place. Try bestbuy because they usually have a deal with buying a product then getting it installed. With the sirius and xm, they are all the same channels now...

 

The salesman there told me I would have to get my XM module ripped out (this is a 2011 truck) and get a sirius one put in. He was also gonna charge me another $200 for the module for steering wheel controls(I already have them so might as well use them)

Bestbuy is a huge company who stand behind their work.it's only a radio not rebuilding a motor.my friend worked at 6th electronics that did crazy $100k cars. Stop at best buy.they ain't going anywhere and I'm sure they warranty it for life
The sat module should just be a plug in. Wires are color coded anyway.

 

I am going to phone one more audio place here in Edmonton, "Audio FX" and then if they are outrageous I am most likely am going to go to Futureshop/Bestbuy. I just phoned and they said that install is around $100 bucks for a video deck.

 

If you don't feel comfortable with an install I guess there is little alternative, but keep in mind it is HIGHLY unlikely that a random installer will hook you in a way that defeats the no video or GPS interaction unless the parking brake is "on" scheme. If you plan to use the unit in a totally legal fashion, then more power to you, but if you want to have a passenger punch in an address and travel there you'll not be able to do so without pulling over, or changing the install wiring (which would impact their install warranty I'm sure).

 

i will have to see if i want a deck with gps so far they are out of my price range

 

Ok, I decided on a Deck and found a decent price/install for it. This one will tie in with my XM and it is $100 install. Is this a good deck?

Just installed that same unit in my chicks FJ last weekend. Pretty pleased with it, it has some cool features especially if you have a jail broken iPhone and if you do DO NOT get the gps. I wouldn't get the gps either way you can get a way better garmin for the same 300$ that you spend on the module. Plus the pioneer gps is pretty crap to begin with. There is a way to bypass the video in park PM me if interested

 

Hey OP what's your location? If your close i'll give you a hand, this stuff is pretty easy to do yourself and i just feel bad that a shop would tell you a grand for install, that's 10+ hours for a 1-2 hour job

 

Thanks for the offer! But sadly I live quite a ways away. I am buying the deck for $380 and install is $100 all I need now is a dash kit. Does anyone have a suggestion on where to buy it?

 

they are installing it for 100 and NOT providing a dash kit? Just do it yourself man, it takes 20 minutes and is very simple. There are some good write-ups on here to walk you through it. install equiptment costs 20-30 bucks btw

 

I think it is a pretty good unit. Pioneer makes the coolest double dins. there pretty good sound quality wise but if you're buying a double din then you probably don't care as long as it doesn't sound like crap. The only reason i would recommend anything else is if you wanted GPS, then give up the cool features of the pioneer and go with kenwood (kenwoods are kind crap feature wise if you dont get gps and are slow to load and change).

I think you'll be really happy with the pioneer, they are really nice units. if you do want gps like i said earlier get a garmin for same 300$ youll be much happier with that.

480 installed isn't bad i think my chick paid 430 and i had to install it (but i did that so i could bypass the video). they should absolutely include the dash kit and wire harness in the 100 install price though.
