Seems you don't know the whole story. Smyth asked to be traded to Edmonton to be closer to his family. Lombardi respected that and went with this, knowing that getting a no name like Fraser would clear up a lot of salary cap space, and allow us to go after someone much younger than Smyth in free-agency. That's not rape.

 

Oh I know every aspect of it....quite well. I've been haunting my interwebs for the past 48 hours watching for any news. I know all about the situation. I'm just saying that we, a) unloaded a total 'flat-liner' in Penner at the trade deadline....and b) got rid of another MAJOR 'flat-liner' in Fraser now.

I know that Smitty wanted to come home (his home-town is where I live). And I know that the LA organization was just following suit. But man......we made out like BANDITS in both of these deals!!!

 

Yeah, Penner's a total loser with no work ethic. He puts in no effort. It's disgusting to watch him play. I agree, you got the better side of that, for sure. In terms of the second trade, it wasn't as much a trade, as an effort to please him and clear up salary space. Fraser's less than 900K a year, in comparison to Smyth's 6.4 last season, and I believe 4 point something this coming season. Point being, it allows us to go after either Brad Richards, or any other quality free agents. Lombardi's not scared to go after someone, hell he almost got Kovalchuk (luckily he didnt). Penner is a total waste of oxygen at this point. His impact on the team was detremental. Frustrating. There was no one we were interested in getting from Edmonton anyway, so i don't really think its that bad. Taylor Hall for Smyth, Handzus, and Penner. It would never have worked but damn that'da been sweet

 

Yeah, I'm aware this actually does open up some good room for LA. I'm just super excited right now!! Smitty isn't the end-all be-all.....but he's certainly a great addition to our young guys, and will hopefully inject that last bit of heart we need to win a few more games. The Oilers lost SOOOOO many 1 point games last year. And considering all our injuries - and the fact that our farm team played the last 3rd of the season for us. A couple more pieces to the puzzle...and things may have been a lot different. So I'm hoping this will ignite that this coming year.

It's still a long shot for us to make the playoffs this coming year (at this stage of our re-build). But the possibility now exists where we can be on the other side of several of those 1 point games.
