That long climb scared me and I turned back! Some great views of the Catskills from some of the south facing roads in that area.

Tiger... ill be recruiting for the USAF so I figure the job market being that way will help me out a bit.

How are the roads during winter? I ask because im getting my wife a car soon and im not sure if I should spring for AWD or not. Ill be picking your brain now that I know you're from the area. :)

Ok gotcha! Yeah, that may help you.

The roads can be shit. I lived here with a Corolla and made it ok living on back roads. Studs on the front and I could get through most stuff, but I did spin off the road once into 3ft of snow. Had to be towed out. When we traded that car this past year it was for a 4wd Rav4, and before that my wife and I traded the Taco back n forth depending on the roads/shifts we worked. My parents have had 2wd all their lives, but my grandparents stay home when it's bad. Mom traded a camry for a 4wd Rav4 in 04 since she has to drive to work each day. So that might give you an idea. If you must have 2wd, make it FWD. RWD sucks around here. I'm not sure where you're coming from, but it's hilly around here. Cortland is mostly flat, but you'll soon realize you need to leave for a lot of things. Need a store like Sears, Lowes, Home Depot, Best Buy, etc, and you'll be heading to Binghamton, Ithaca, or Syracuse. Each 30-50 miles away. Cortland has grocery stores, Wal-Mart, K-Mart, and supposedly a Home Depot or Lowes coming sometime soon. Anything else and you're driving to another city.

You might think living in the city limits saves you, but they don't plow the side roads for shit. It's also 50 miles or so from Syracuse which is the "snow belt" and gets a lot of lake effect snow so sometimes that makes it's way south.

There really isn't much for local attractions. The above mentioned stores, smaller mom n pop ones, restaurants, bars, movie theater, and a couple mini golf places. They were widening 281 (main road with all the big name stores on it now) to 4 lanes over the last couple of years, but beyond that I didn't see much growth last month when I drove through.

The smaller towns of McGraw, Homer, and Dryden are just a few miles away if looking for a house. They also have their own school districts separate from Cortland. Marathon isn't that far away either, small school district, and has 2 main ways to get to Cortland. Route 11 and route 81 (highway) to choose from. Sometimes one is better than the other during the winter.

Thanks for all the info! I grew up in a small town of 2000 pop. so I'm not to worried about the lack of stores. Now on the other hand my wife is the one who will be shocked if she can't find a Starbucks haha.

I was thinking about buying a house but if the economy in the area is moving slow then I'd rather not get stuck with the payment in four years if it doesn't sell. But it doesn't look like there are any decent places to rent that will be safe for my family without driving 30+ min. Hmmm....

Well how many TW members are around the area? After I get settled in and get a moment to relax it would be nice to meet up and bbq or something. The only mod I have done to my tacoma is putting an old man cap on the back. I love my leer cap :) Should come in handy when the snow and rain hits.

Your wife is SOL buddy. http://www.google.com/search?q=star...roup&ct=more-results&resnum=1&ved=0CC4QtQMwAA

Closest Starbucks is in the Cornell Commons in Ithaca.

Yeah, the apartments are gonna be tough. Low income families + low paying jobs + crappy job market = not so great apartments. Try looking for houses for rent. Local paper is the Cortland Standard (i assume they have a website, but I can't think of it offhand).

Most of the TW members are north of Syracuse I think. Like Rochester area, or toward Albany, and down closer to NYC. Basically everywhere but here! One guy I know on here is in Ithaca for school. Demoncleaner is in Binghamton, but I haven't seen him on here in months.

I hail from Good ol' Scotia...about 30 minutes northwest of Albany. For the Air National Guard fellas among us, I work across the street from Stratton and live about a mile away, directly under one of their flight paths...gotta love the C-130s...

So far I've added an Advance folding bed cover and since removed it. Gave it to my son in Maine, he has an 05 2wd. GT perfect fit seat covers. Weathertech floor mats and window vent visors. Waag center brush/grill guard. Hose clamp tailgate mod. Turned off the seat belt chime. Added Ultra-Gauge. Trailer hitch. Softopper. Replaced sun visors with slide out style. Toyota bed extender. Had Firestone Destinations and now Michelin LTX AT2 in stock size. More mods to come; Fog lights, locking storage in bed, intermittent wipers. Now looking for Radio/HU upgrade. and maybe a lift way down the road.
    Fairport, near Rochester.

What tires you guys running ? The junk that came on my 09 were suicide in the snow and slush. I've pretty much wore them out and l'm looking to buy soon. The dealer can make a good deal if I buy the tires they can get. Looking for all season mostly solid roads but some light off roads. Nothing serious.

    I grew up in Fairport!

The stock dunlops, 245 r16, have been ok for me but they might be different than were put on your truck.

I did put in 260 pounds of sand in the back in the winter and keep tires are correct psi.

For snow and ice narrower is better than wider.

I'm running 265/75 16 Yokohama Geolander ATS. No problems so far. Had 285/75 16 Kumho Road Venture AT-KL78's before. I liked those, but needed something a bit cheaper and a bit narrower. The 285's rubbed my UCA's at full lock. The stock rugged fails sucked in light snow.

I had 160lbs in mine with stock tires and it didn't matter. Maybe another 100lbs would've help.
