Frame rusted through club

Also I don't believe the whole frame was repainted. I can see primer overspray on the surrounding areas. This means the particular area was touched up. Primer is porous, it will NOT stop rust.

 

Don't be an ignorant dick. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see his frame was totally botched by whatever grease monkey was paid to fix the damage.

And just to be clear, I'm not commenting on anyone elses situation with the rust. The OP's situation is limited to a specific area and it comes as NO surprise that the area has been repaired.

I think it should also be noted that I've owned a car from the North East (New York to be specific). I bought an IS300 from there and shipped it back. I went to change my headers/exhaust and the shit wasn't just rusted...the flanges had FUSED into one single piece. After cutting the bolts off it still wouldn't separate even with an air hammer. So yeah, I know what's up with your salting of the roads because I have experience with it.

Well that would certainly explain why Dana agreed to pay Toyota a large sum in settlement for damages due to the frame ordeal. WAIT, no it wouldn't!...

They paid me just as handsomely for my 2000 as they would have had i not undercoated the frame.

But seriously I dotn even know how you can see weld there. its not a weld..
I repainted whole frame there are even pictures on that forum of me doing it. The grey stuff on pic is a coat of paint I sprayed before I started sanding area. To make sure I dont damage main paint surrounding the rust.

For those that ask iof there where sliders the answer is no. This is right behind the front wheel so nothing can be welded there. Its also on the side of the frame which means it could not get any damage. Still waiting for Toyota to chime in and say something interesting.

There is no repair to that area, I dont know what gives you that idea. I am original owner and spent almost every year painting something on that truck. This area looked np when I did put the coat of paint on the frame around less then 3 years ago, there was no bubble visible last year, this year it was tiny bubble so I wanted to fix it, and discovered surprise. Truck never been in accident either. So no damage and no fixes.

down here in daytona beach we're allowed to drive on the beach, after i do i always hose my off at the house, and keep the underside freshened up with sime rustoleum black spatter paint from wal mart

 

That without a doubt looks like welds ground flush but lack of penetration in that one spot.

 

With the shadowing of that gap def looks alot deeper than paint, u modified ur truck and now have a problem... Suck it up and fix it urself

Also there is some shiny rough textured metal right above that in the second picture but in the first it's black.

The Tacoma's frame paint is VERY pathetic...rust on the underside of the truck when it was brand new, hell, even before we drove it off the dealer's lot. If I had known that it had rust from the start I would have chose a different Tacoma. (I looked under the rest of their Tacoma's on their lot later and they did not have any rust...YET.) I should have inspected the undercarriage carefully before we signed the papers and drove it off the lot, but who the fuck should have to be that careful when buying a NEW $30k truck?!?! The dealer eventually fixed it, but not before they acted like it was no big deal and tried to brush me off.

I agree 100% with those of you who say that the quality of cars/trucks has declined over the years. My 1998 4Runner has been through a lot of days at the beach, fishing, and mild offroading but that thing has minimal rust with no aftermarket undercoating, way less than the Tacoma. Frame is spotless, only got a little surface rust on the rear axle pumpkin and front lower control arms (which I will be addressing soon).

I guess I was one of the suckers who fell for the "electronic rustproofing" scam, but for $300 I figured I'd give it a try, out of curiosity. Gotta bring it in some time in July for its first annual checkup and to change the anode or something, not exactly sure what they're gonna do. I'll keep you guys posted if this system helps or if it is really just a scam, although I am not expecting much from it to be honest.

Don't get me wrong though, I really do love my Tacoma. I still believe that the Tacoma is the best compact/mid size truck out there today, aside from this damn rust problems that they have. Toyota should have learned from their mistakes with the 1st gens and used that to improve the 2nd gens. I guess now all that matters to them is cutting costs, even if it means losing their reputation for building some of the most reliable trucks on the road.

 

I get the feeling there's a real desire not to believe here ... a whole lot of guys driving $30k trucks who really want this to be the OP's fault. Because if it is the OP's fault then we don't have to worry about it. But if it's not the OP's fault ... if Toyota fucked up on the 2nd gens like they did the 1st gens, then it's only going to get worse for all of us. Time most certainly will tell.

 

Naaaa... it could be a run in the goopy paint stuff he's slathered all over it, partially sanded away. Look how thick it is in the pulled- back shot.

It looks to me like he covered a small spot of rust with his thick paint coats and it continued to rust underneath, so now he has pitting. Really common and the reason the Ziebart process never worked as advertised Unless there is rust-through (which he's not demonstrated) Toyota will do nothing..

Just treat the area with phosphoric acid rust remover and prime/paint again. Then keep a close eye for more hidden bubbles with rust underneath.
