Grey wire mod

hey guys. what kind of wire should I buy? can you crimp a wire without any special tools? is there a better way to connect the new wire to the grey wire than just twisting the metal around and then taping it together? if so, can u do it without special tools? Thanks and sorry, wiring of any kind gives me anxiety...

 

what do you do with the other end of the grey wire?

 

so one end gets grounded and the other end just gets taped off.. simple.

 

this was the easiest mod that I have ever done to a truck! only took 15mins from start to finish with most of that time trying to find a 10mm socket to unbolt the 4x4 module from the truck. Damn unorganized tool box! lol, Awesome mod though. I tried it out and it works great

LOL don't just twist the wire at least go to the auto parts store and get a wiring kit with but connectors and ring terminals. Most of them come with a wire crimper if you buy the larger kits. The best way is to solder and shrink tube the wire and it's probably less money to do it that way seeing how Home Depot has a butane soldering iron for about 15 bucks.

did mine and its amazing. not hard either. just took the time to build up the balls to cut up perfectly good wiring in a 12k dollar truck

 

Okay, maybe I didn't look good enough but when I went to do this a few months back I pulled back the kick panel and couldn't find the 4x4 computer? I know for a fact that I have a locker because it locks in when in 4lo.... Am I just dumb for not finding it or did they do something different with the 96 models?

 

It locks in right when you put it in 4wd or you have a button

Because if you don't have a button you don't have a E-locker

Mines an automatic truck, but with a stick shift for the four-wheel drive and manual locking hubs.

 

If you have never pushed a button on the left side of the steering wheel you have never locked the rear. unless someone dropped in a lunchbox locker then your locking in 2wd too.


This is the button if you don't have this you don't have a factory E-locker.

 

I know for a fact everything on my truck involving 4x4 is stock (not modded), but when I'm in 4lo and i turn on our gravel driveway, the tire on the inside of the turn will leave a small rut mark because it turns at the same speed as the outside tire

Yeah, well I won't be getting one of those anytime soon. Not enough know-how to do it myself, and no telling the price it would be to have somebody do it.

 

Find a totaled TRD and swap out the whole axle and just wire the locker to a switch in the cab. or you can get a lunchbox locker for about 250.00

 

We've looked in pretty much every junkyard in this area since we got the truck 3 years ago for here and there parts, and I think we've found maybe 2 tacomas and both were completely totaled. So my only chice would probably be a lunchbox locker.

 

Lockright or Aussie locker would be your best bet
