So basic mining:

So they have spent decades separating oil from sand by mining it and putting the pile into an "Extractor" which is a fancy name for a heated chamber. The oil melts and flows out of the pile of sand/dirt/clay/ground like it was water, and is then collect from the bottom of the chamber and sent to be processed.


SAGD = Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage
works like this:
Instead of riping up the ground, they just drill 2 L shaped holes in the ground. They drill Vertical till they reach the oil patch underground, then head horizontal across the oil patch. They drill the second hole to do the same, except about another 50-150 feet below the first it starts horizontal. The horizon sections are perforated with tiny holes. Basically the first pipe sends down 9200 PSI Steam, which slowly heats and pressurizes up the oil chamber. The oil melts out of the sand and ground and sinks lower because of the heat and gravity. The pressure pushes it all back up the second lower pipe returning oil already mostly seperated from sand.

It's freaking brilliant how simple and effective it is really.

Also, your comment about the lakes. I've seen oilsands companies move ENTIRE lakes. If they want it moved, they'll move it

All of this discussion raises a question... do Canadians wage war by throwing money at each other? I'd think if that's the case, the province with the most coinage would wind up being the winner, or is Canadian currency prone to causing really bad paper cuts?

thats interesting. its like directional boring (sp?) but cooler. i dont think they will be moving the big northern sask lakes though. little sloughs i could see but not athabasca or peter pond.

it wasnt enough for me but now i can hit up the bars so no need for house parties unless you're broke from dropping $80 a night.

 

thats usually what happens on vacations. do they take american express in the uk? i know here not all places take it, but everyone takes visa.
