I tried taking the dog for a ride around town the other day and being a lab made it very difficult for her to get comfortable. So I made a quick and easy shelf for her to use and I like it so much I am going to make it look a little better so it can be in there all the time and not look like a jalopy (sp?).

I am also curious as to how many other people have one of these so I made a poll. I did a search and saw some posts about the shelf but no polls.

I made it out of some chip board (18"x48") and 2x3s with some 45 degree blocks for support. I chose the 18" based on where my wife had her seat pushed back to and it just so happens that the edge of the shelf fits perfectly up against the back of the front console. So I guess 18" is the max you could go. I also fold up my seats and the shelf sits right on top of the back center console and I have a 2x3 on the back edge of the shelf to help support it as well. It really doesn't need it though but it will be handy when I make a flip top section that allows me to access the center console back there without taking the whole thing out.

Right now I have one of those thin rubber trunk mats from WalMart ($15) to cover it. It is a little short side to side by an inch but it works for now. I throw the dog's blanket back there so she has something comfortable to lay on and she loves it. I plan to either paint it or cover it with the auto carpet from WalMart like one of the other guys in the forum did to his. As this evolves, I will post pics to hopefully help others, get me some feedback on how to make it better, and to inspire others to do the same. Right now, I have about $25 invested in it and that includes the mat. The carpeting was cheaper than the mat but I figured the mat would be easier to clean than the carpet.

I like it. I have been brainstorming something like that to use in my double cab back for our three dogs. Mainly want to make a non slip floor and something to protect the door panels from paws since they like to hang their heads out of the back window.

That did cross my mind for a future build as I figured out what I would put under there. If I made a drawer though, I would have to remove the shelf to get at the little storage boxes that are under the seat. I am still trying to think about how to do the drawers and still be able to use the storage boxes too.

    Thanks for the idea!!

just make the drawer you’r storage boxes. and don’t use the factory ones.? that is one option. the drawer should hold more that those things anyways. i know the ones on dads. ’00 extended cab tundra don’t hold to much at all.

The best thing I have found to help make it non-slip is to use carpet. I did that on my Avalanche years ago and it made it a lot more safe for her. There was a thread about the shelf or something for a DC on here somewhere. I will see if I can locate it. For the door panels, I can't think of a way to protect them at the moment.

Yeah, now that I look at my pic, I could make something that took up that whole space and slides out. That is a great idea and it will keep things from being shoved up under there and getting lost under the seats.

hey i think what most DC guys do is fold the back of the seats down and but a blanket down. or a dog bed. the back seats fold flat. and the bottom fold forward and i think it would keep them from putting there paws on the center console and trying to get up front.

That's what I've been doing and it's better than throwing them on the seats but still need something more.

I built a shelf/platform in my DC for my two goldens. Very handy and provides extra security for all my gear along the back storage wall. I just use a padlock to keep it closed. One of the best mods you can do to a truck If you have dogs!

Good idea, does your Lab or for that matter, the Goldens sit/lay still most of the time? My Brittany, lays down on the highway, but has to snoop the windows at every traffic light or stop. Driving through Amish country to my Dad's farm means a potential horse at every stop.

The best one I've seen here on TW is by "jpmorrisvb" and maybe he'll post about what he did. Very nice craftsmanship!

I saved some pics to make one, but traded my access cab for a double cab. The DC's back seat folds down for a very durable "dog area" with opening widows on three sides.

My dogs like their new Tacoma DC even more than I do.

Great idea. I just got an access cab. I have a yellow lab that does not like the Cabela's hammock all that much. I am going to build one of these this weekend and give it a go.

Thanks for posting it with the photos!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have one in my 1st gen for the dogs and it also makes a great level platform for other crap as well. Mine sits on the raised part (pulled the jack and stuff out of the hatches) and then used one 4x4 on each side to support the front. I used a 3/4 inch piece of melamine with a 1/2 inch rubber mat from agway. Gives the dogs grip and is comfortable to boot. :)

I was thinking about making one of these. Then I realized my seats fold down to create a flat surface. Now i just put a towel down to help protect from hair and scratch marks on the plastic storage boxes.
