I've got a 2002 Tacoma Xtra Cab 2.7L SR5 automatic with 150,000 miles on it. Last weekend my engine shot a rod.

I've got the engine almost ready to be pulled, but have a question about how to pull it. I'd like to leave the transmission in the truck, but am unsure of the procedure.

Can I simply unbolt the motor from the transmission, slide it forward and lift it out? Do I need to do anything to the driveline? (transmission, t-case, shafts??)

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Markus

Just undo the belhousing bolts and you should be good to go. It will slide right out.

Is it auto or 5 spd? If it is auto you want to take the torq converter bolts or nuts out to avoid binding on the front pump and seal.

Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.

    ^this^

It might be a little difficult with a thrown rod though.

It's an automatic. Where are the torque converter bolts? What do I need to worry about for the reinstall?

They are on the fly wheel. You should have a small sheet metal plate where the tranny meets the motor. You should be able to access them there. The only issue is turning the motor. I don't know how much of an issue the thrown rod is going to give you.

I know where that is, why would I have to turn the engine, to access the bolts? Engine still runs, it just sounds terrible, so I should be able to spin the crankshaft.

Because the bolts are around the perimeter of the fly wheel. Yes, spin the crankshaft bolt by hand (socket).

Take it slow and have two spotters. Replace the torque converter with new or rebuilt, put fluid in it and lube the seals with trans fluid.

I don't remember if the seals are on the input shaft or not, but replace them if they are.

How hard is swapping out the TC? A new TC is 1,000 bucks. I think i'll just do the seals and clean everything out

Engine separated and came out with no problems. I get the new engine tomorrow, and new Torque Converter Seals tomorrow. I'll post some pictures when I'm done

No or low oil pressure. Oil is critical! Overheating will cause a breakdown of the oil and yeild the same result.

Ouch! Yea, that's the fun way. The others are slightly less obvious:)

Separation went great, having some trouble getting them docked. Any tricks or suggestions? I'm very close 3/8 of an inch from everything sliding together.

Also, this project just got a little more expensive, cracked my head on the cherry picker, a quick trip to urgent care, a couple hundred dollars and I've been glued back together.
