get a foodsaver...then you can bag anything (including emergency supplies like matches, bandages, etc which is a good idea if you're going to be in wet environments)

just a tip - if you're going to bag anything liquid, freeze it first in a hard sided container and then transfer it to a baggie.

they can be a little pricey if you're not careful - its easy to get carried away vacuum sealing everything in sight  Just be conservative and buy the continuous roll of plastic, not the individual baggies (much cheaper that way). I would think its a must have for any camper, hiker, hunter or the like.

My family barbecues (smokes) a boat load of meat every so often and freeze it for eating throughout several months using these things, never thought of using it for backpacking. Good plan ma'am.

Anyone want to recommend a fleece jacket? I'll be buying one today from REI.

Preferably one that's not a million dollars, but I am open to suggestions. Thanks!

look at your outlet malls. REI tends to be crazy expensive in that area... or also try Sierra Trading Post. Got a nice Oakley ski jacket there for 250. normally 400

I have an Eddie Bauer First Ascent fleece pullover that is really nice, and a couple of Columbia's too. EB is pricy but they do have sales quite frequently and their stuff is good quality and holds up well. REI is having their summer sale, check out the website and see what sort of deals they have right now.

I think I'm going to go to REI. That way if I don't like the jacket or shoes I can return them and get a refund.

I'm going to stay away from sierra trading post. They totally just screwed my trip to Colorado this weekend by not shipping my new shoes when they were supposed to.

What are you going to be using it for?

Fleece is great for around camp, or for light activity. It's cotton, so if you get it wet, it won't breathe and won't dry quickly. If you're doing anything strenuous, but need warmth, I would get a softshell (this is another whole topic).

If you are going to be throwing it on at camp and/or doing some light hiking, then a fleece is good to go. I'd get one with a wind-stopping technology. When you're not moving, the wind saps more heat from your body than anything else, so you can get a lighter fleece if it stops wind. Columbia, The North Face and Sierra Designs all make decent ones that aren't wallet-busters. If you want to go higher-end, look into Patagonia and Buffalo. They make good stuff but you won't be able to eat for a week...
