trucked stalled...need suggestions

I drove my truck about 4 miles and was waiting in a drive through when the engine just shut off (totally sucked!!!!). There was not sputter, it was like I turned off the truck. When I tried to start it, it turned over but would not start. The tow truck driver had me turn it over while he tapped the fuel tank but it still didnt turn over As a matter of fact, the truck stopped turning over and now the starter makes a loud whine..

has anybody run into an issue like this or have suggestions????

Anybody know a good resaonable mechanic in the Irvine area??

Well, my first guess that since it was running then just quit it was something that just went. I would look fuel related, possibly the fuel pump just quit. Its possible that you damaged the starter trying to start so you may be faced with two issues now.

I would change out the fuel filter first, then try the fuel pump next.

 

thanks for the suggestions...I changed the fuel filter already and am doing the starter tomorrow...

anyone do the fuel pump????how big of a PITA is it to get to???

they say you should never have to change the fuel filter, but sometimes it is necessary. The only thing that makes it hard to change is the rusty nuts and lines, they can break easily if too rusty

 

I'm sure you did but i'll ask anyways. Have you checked all the fuses, both in the cab and in the engine compartment? Disconnected the battery to let the computer reset. Also check the fuel pump reset switch. It turns power to the fuel pump off in case of an accident. I think it is under the glove compartment but not 100%. Your owner's manual should say. It also could be your ignition system. An easy way to check this is to remove the main intake tube, spray a quick spray of starting fluid in there, replace the tube and try to start it. If it tries to fire and then dies the ignition system at least works. I am also unsure if you have a timing belt or chain but if you have a belt it could be that. If it is a chain I doubt it is that as they are usually good for longer than the life of the engine.

 

Thanks...I tried the fuses but didnt even think of the fuel kill switch...I'll check that out tomorrow along with the starter spray after I change out the starter...
