OME 881

Ok my 881s arive today. I have never changed springs before and need a little help. I was going to go with the 882s but after talking to Slee OFF Road the talked me into going with the 881s because i am going to be using my stock struts. All I wanna do is lift the front end of my truck back to stock height after installing my new ARB Bull Bar Bumper. After installing the bumper this added an additional 150 lbs. to the front of my truck dropping the front end approximately 1.75" to 2". With the stiffer 881s I hope to achieve the stock height or just a bit more to level the truck. Has any one had any experience in this matter?

 

I put 881's on with nitro chargers and got about 1.75-2' so that looks to be in your range. so your not going to replace the shock absorber itself, and reuse the existing one?

I am going to replace the spring only.

 

All I need is the stiffens of the spring to hold the front of my truck up. Was it had the change the springs on you're truck ? I have never done this and don't know what to do to change them.

 

It was cake for me because i ordered the new strut assembled (paid the extra 120, but well worth it in my mind). i just unbolted the old unit and installed the new one. i didnt want to have to mess with changing out the hardware and taking it to a shop or renting a spring compressor. i wanted to have the stock unit on hand, fully assembled.
i would recomend replacing the shock absorber also if your going thru the trouble of getting springs.
I guess you could use the old shock, and the spring would in fact give the support, but the shock may not work well with that spring, and you could end up with a harsh ride......... thats a whole other subject. theres tons of reasons on this site as to what shock spring combo to use, or not to use, and why.
but in theory, the spring supports the weight of the truck and the shock helps with bumps, to put it simple. So yes, as long as that spring fits on that shock, it will help the front end sag

 

there is a ton of info on this subject on this site. look around for awhile, it may change your ideal setup

 

The most challenging part will be compressing the stock spring/strut assembly to get it apart. Then reversing the process with the new spring. A daunting task at best because of having to use a spring compressor.

My $ .02.

If you are going to the trouble of doing this, you might as well replace your stock shocks with something that can handle the much more stout spring you plan to use. It is very possible that the OME 881 spring will overpower you stock shock and you will end up having to replace it anyway.

There are a large number of threads on this site from guys who have gone through all this stuff you are facing. I am fairly certain the consensus among those that have replaced their coil springs would be to replace your shocks at the same time.

This is something you will have to gauge for yourself but at least read about the experiences of others before you do this.

Replace the shocks.

 

first i used the spring compressor to installed both the bilstein and 881s. i noticed something doesn't look too good so i took it to the shop to redo the assemblied again. save me some time there and just brought it home to install onto car.

 

I got new stock struts and I installed the OME 881 springs on them. This did exactly what I was wanting to acheve it picked the front end up to level the truck out. The front is now just a little higher than stock. With this combination it levels the truck right out and the ride is excelant.

Thanks guys! I am running 265/70s this has been alot of work I have done to my Taco in the past week. I hit a deer about a year ago and busted my grill up and dented the stock bumper and tore up the plastic air damn. This week I installed the new ARB bumper, HID lights, disabled my DRLs and installed new struts and OME881 springs. It is all worth it though talk about functionally! Bring on the deer Baby!!!

Did you use the 10mm top plate spacer or just the 881? Also do you have a winch in there? Just tryin to fig out what route im gunna go.
