Junk speakers

I'm sure this has been posted a million time but I have to say my piece. I just started to replace my speakers in my 2010 double cab and I was shocked just how crappy the factory speakers are. Such a nice truck and sound is so important why in the world go so cheap.

IMO the stock speakers are no better, no worse than the average stock (not optioned, i.e., JBL) speakers in any other car. Are they up to the standards set by Levinson in an optioned Lexus, or Dynaudio in the Volvo - NO. But are they as good or better than the stock speakers in a Chevy pickup - YES (again, IMO). When considering sound quality, one also has to consider the bottom nearly fell out of the car audio industry some time back; it seemed nobody cared about really good sound, what with 128K Mp3s, etc.

The JBL's are a different story. They are better than the stock speaker's but still not great audio speakers. However, according to a former Toyota dealership owner I spoke with, the JBL system was originally sourced from JBL as an in-car video sound system for the kiddies to watch movies, not for upgraded audio (hence the synthesized center channel and subwoofer in my wife's JBL equipped 4-Runner).

Marketing - always think of marketing reports when wondering why an OEM did something.

 

I guess what was a shock to me was everything was plactic and so light. I'm pushing 40ish and haven't done this is a few years but when I was much younger and did this alot things were steel and the magnets were much larger and heavy.

Ok now I'm making myself feel old. Things have changed i guess.

 

You're right, things have changed for the better. Things like plastic composites allow you to build a very strong structure that doesn't resonate like metal. The stock speakers have a neodynium magnet which is waaaay stronger than your typical ferrite magnet and weighs less!
