Did something dumb and it is bugging the crap out of me

Question...I wanted to goof with my 4wd the other day. I have never owned one until recently, so I put it in 4L and drove it up my driveway. It was dry asphalt and concrete. It was only about 30-40 feet. I read a thread that doing that is really bad idea....comments on if I did any damage? Thanks in advance.

No...just that type that worries for nothing most of the time.

 

It becomes an issue when you turn....then you can damage something.

 

Assuming that's your driveway in your sig pic, it's a straight line so you have zero worries. Even 30-40 ft of curve wouldn't do much... just don't try a winding road with it engaged.

 

If thats the worst it sees, I'll buy your truck when you're ready to get rid of it

 

I don't recall if I turned...maybe a bit...but if you look at my signature pic, that is how far I went.

 

You'll be fine. I put mine in 4wd once a month and 4-Lo now and then to get the gears turning. It won't hurt anything doing so on dry pavement if you go in a straight line. Calm your fears.

hahahahaha..no worries man...they dont want you turning or driving distances in 4lo on pavement thats all moving it around itll be fine

 

No problem...just don't make a habit of it. If you had made some sharp turns you would have known right away the truck didn't like it. As long as you were going straight your good...when turning it binds everything up and the truck would have made grinding noises and felt like it hopped across the pavement. Read the links below about turning on pavement while in 4WD...

 

No worries. You could put it in 4lo and drive hundreds of feet on pavement and be perfectly fine. Even if you turned, you'd feel it start to bind up on you. But it's not like the gears are made of glass. Nothing's gonna shatter .. that is unless it's made wrong. There are Tacomas out there with hundreds of thousands of miles that have been wound up, bound up, beat down and still go strong. Hell if 40 feet was all it took, then it sure as hell isn't worth $30k!

It's fine. Besides - read your manual. It recommends driving in 4H every so often to keep the gears lubricated.
