if it's not the 4runner look then definitely the Highlander look, you can easily see throughout the lineup and get a pretty good picture of what the "look" is on the new tacoma front end ;) closer to Hilux...

Well shit... I still have my hopes for any 4.0 change before the release but I was in Italy in May and saw this...But it had a Disel. Looks like I may have to invest in a supercharger j/k, but I did want the new 4.0 for the MPG and the slight power increase

The other advantage of the 4Runner engine would have been the long life spark plugs - huge shame they are not changing it if it's true.

Are there any 3" factory suspention lifts now or are they all aftermarket? I am interested to see what a factory lift would be in a "Baja" version.

So i'm guessing Baja edition similar to the TX-pro. Nice addons but nothing so crazy you couldn't just do it yourself. For me, seems cool but not worth waiting 8-10 more months for. I am curiouse to the reasoning behind the MSRP to HP issue for the new 4.0.

More aggressive looking front end, while not looking identical to the 5th gen 4Runner? Curious to see that...

I think the new 4.0 will run better but not that much.Current 4.0 - 236 hp @5200 rpm and torque 266 @4000 rpm.New 4.0 -270 hp @5600 rpm and torque - 278 @4400 rpm.It has to run higher rpms to get that extra.I do like the extra 2 MPG it gets.I would like to see peak torque at a lower rpm around 3400 rpm then you would see a big difference in power.

The new engine would be great paired with a 6 speed auto.

With new CAFE standards coming into effect in 2016 I beleive maybe we will see a better engine than the 4Runner 4.0 matted with a 6 speed transmission and 3.91 gears.I am not a fan of turbos but I bet we will see them before too long as a way to get mpgs up.Four cyl. turbo pumping out 300 plus HP with peak torque of 350 ft lbs around 2500 rpm. getting 26 mpg or better.Ford seems to be going that way.

Very disappointing if the rumors are true.

I don't understand why Toyota isn't addressing the Tacoma gas mileage more aggressively, with all the competition from other manufacturers. They've had years to work on this since fuel prices started going up. Yes, I know it's a truck and I don't expect anything over 30 MPG.

Toyota is very good at designing fuel-efficient cars, but now, they're lagging behind US automakers in this area.

So what we are determining here is that since the Tacoma is in a different class only with the Frontier which toyota dominates in everything other than hp, it does not need to be upgraded with a new engine because it may be too much of an MSRP to hp ratio that everybody would be willing to pay for anyway. We don't need to change the 4.0 to a newer version in which it has performed succesfully in other models of the same company even though we have the technology and other car companies are continually striving for better mpg....thats pretty crappy if you ask me. I however am still holding out for the change with the don't completely believe it until I see it attitude. If I purchase the 2012 and the 4.0 is upgraded shortly after (later in the year or 2013) I might be a little upset. We will soon see.

Tacoma, Frontier, and Dakota are the three mid-size trucks (along with their lightly-modified badge-engineered cousins).

With full-size truck fuel economy approaching mid-size truck fuel economy, ALL of the mid-size and compact trucks will need to significantly increase their fuel economy. My guess is why Dakota is being axed and replaced with a "lifestyle truck"; they can use a minivan or SUV chassis like Ridgeline is using, and design fuel-efficient drivetrains that are designed for fuel economy and normal suburban usage.

Most trucks, mine included, spend more time commuting and hauling things home from Home Depot or hauling yard waste to the dump than they ever will off-road. If you design from that point of view, you could boost efficiency, interior room, and fuel economy significantly by avoiding the engineering compromises that come with also making the same chassis work as an off-road vehicle.

Maybe Toyota won't go that way due to their reputation and history for making capable off-road trucks, but if the accounting department forecasts greater profits from a lifestyle truck than from a standard compact/mid-size 4x4 design...well, the writing is on the wall.

The tacoma is one of the most versatile trucks made as far as configurations and packages go. I dont see why they dont make a 'fuel efficient' package or something that has a higher gear ratio and is a bit lighter.
