265/75/16 or 285's with 5100s @ 2.5? What should I do?

Going to put my Billies (5100s) @ 2.5 and want new tire when I do. What size should I go. Not to worried about gas prices with bigger tires just rubbing and trimming. Also wondering what brand to get. Looking at cooper stt (mudd terrain) or other aggressive AT. What do you think?

 

I think you need to search the countless threads on running 285s. You'll need to figure backspacing/offset and where you wont mind trimming and/or notching.

 

You'll have to trim for the 285's... I stuck with 265's just for that reason...

 

I'm in the same situation, I love the look if the 285's but I'm considering going with a 265 MT instead...

 

Go with 285s That's what I did and I love it. You will have to trim but it's nothing major

 

I have Eibach springs and billies set at .85 and toytec tsb add-a-leaf in back for a total of 2.5" of lift and i run 285-75/R16. I have the TRD "ivan man stewert" offroad rims and even with trim I run at full lock when reversing and it sounds horrible.
I also rub when the tires are stuffed when 4 wheeling and if I hit something hard enough I hit my cab mount and it again sounds horrible.

If your not going to do any offroading then stick with the 265. Here are pictures of both:

You can see the 285's fill the wheel well much more but you run into more issues running them. Until your going to be doing offroad where you really need it, I would stick with 265's.

 

Thanks for the pics! Looks great either way although those 285s look really nice but sounds bad with the rubbing issue. You think it could be the difference in tire tread? (Looks like bfg km2s 285 that your runnning which have a more aggressive wrapping tread than the ATs.)

285 > 265s with 2.5+ lift..

 

I'd say go with 265/75/16.

I have the Toytec ULK on mine with the Dakar leaf packs and the 265/75 don't look too small with the lift, in my opinion.





No rubbing, therefore no trimming. You said gas wasn't really an issue with 285's, but hey, if you go with 265, you can use that unused gas money for other mods. Tires are the Goodyear Duratrac. Had them for over half a year and 5k miles and love them. Aggressive look, while still handling great on road and during rainy weather. Honestly, best A/T tire in my opinion.

 

I used to have 285's, but I didnt like the rub and I didnt feel like cutting into my frame to make them fit, so now I have 265's.

 

I'm considering 275/75/17

 

Hmm... I have 16's and I think 265's are the biggest I can go before 285's. I know there are 275/70/16, but those are pretty much the same size as my 265's.

I slapped a set of 265/75/16 Duratracs on Billy 5100's with Eibach coils (set to 0) and an Alcan 2" leaf pack.
Took it up to some pretty gnar trails by Central City this weekend. I was really pleased with the clearance the tires offered as well as the ability to completely cycle through the suspension and stuff them bad boys up into the wheel wells- no rubbing, no chopping, 19mpg, no loss of power going up I-70... really a great set up.

If I were doing a trail that required bigger tires to get it done, the whole truck configuration would have to be changed (i.e. bigger lift, trail armor, winch, front locker, gearing, etc.).

Bottom line, I was impressed with the ability of the truck to creep up some she-it with the 265/75/16's

i just ordered 265/75/16 wrangler MTR w/ kevlar, the overall width is about 32" so i may have a little rubbing, i have stock in back and 1.75 up front

i stayed away from 285 because of all the things to watch out for

hitting fenders hitting mud flaps hitting uca's hitting frame not stuffing all the way etc..

maybe down the road when i can get a proper 3" lift ill go 285

If I were in your shoes I'd run 285s....they make the truck look like a tank! I'll be running 295s soooooon
