Anyone open up their TRD hood scoop?

it looks cool, but Ive never been a fan of non-functional scoops


tempted to open it up and maybe put some foam in there or something else to keep major debris out

 

You want to open it up and then plug it up with foam You lost me there.....

 

There are threads on here about this and basically all say it would be useless. You probably just opened a can with this btw.

 

the scoop was not designed to be functional...it'll do nothing positive if you remove its innards...

air would go through foam much better than solid plastic/metal

(air filters often use only a piece of foam)

 

what cools the engine is your air intake....all your gonna do is make your engine bay dirty as fuck...this has been covered 1,665,678,432 times....try searching

 

and air filters use either a paper or synthetic media for filtering

 

Have you opened it up ? If so any diff in temp ?

 

It would cool the plastic cover on the motor and that's about it....as was already noted, the intake and the radiator are what cools the internals of the engine.

 

why not just put fine mesh with a layer of cloth infront of the mesh to keep most water/debris out

you can even put a later of spot paper behind the mesh so you know if water gets in

 

or just leave it alone because like mentioned before...this has been tried and tested 1,456,789,443 times and NOTHING IS BENEFITED FROM IT!!!

 

no, a scoop would make the engine compartment cooler (the silly people that put an inside the engine compartment CAI would most benefit from this) otherwise it isnt going in the engine but just cooling the exterior

They are right you wont see any benefit in a Tacoma, first off where is the air gonna go, it isnt going to cool anything. However there is no need to "filter it" if you decide to open it up, I had a STi before this and it did have a functioning air scoop on the hood, you have all seen em, but the air was also directed straight into the Intercooler so it had a purpose. I never did have anything bigger than the occasional bug in there, so no reason to close it off.

but it won't cool the "exterior" enough to change the temp on its "interior"...so again...why bother!!!!

 

but we can all agree that people with aftermarket CAI's would benefit?

 

why bother? principle, non functioning scoops are inherently cheesy
