Rei has a good outlet and they ship free to the store. I try to buy most of my gear on sale or closeout.

Has anyone ever used wingnut packs?

I loved it. I really liked that you could strap anything on to it, anywhere you wanted, but in reality it was just to big for me. It was a 5000 cubic inch pack, and i just dont need that much room. when you have a pack that big you subconscious want to pack it full. It was causing me to carry about 10-15 extra pounds in weight. It even helped me gain my first trail name, overkill. My new pack is 3100 cubic inches and should work out much better.

I accually heard sumthing about them last week for the first time, but I have never worn them.

I hear you on over packing it. I have done that a few times. It is extremely easy to do. I usually put my tarp and hammock in the bottom and leave that top section for everything else. It is weird though.. I can be fully packed in my 5500 but only be at 20 lbs.

Added one more Kelty product to the house. Parents just bought the Kelty Havana beach shelter. Going to Panama City in a few weeks. Gotta get out of the sun somehow! Going to be doing some car camping for the first time in a LONG time after that trip too. Heading east after my parents leave the condo and head up the coast to Charleston, then through the Tail of the Dragon in TN. Should be pretty fun

Where in Tennessee are you headed? My friends and I are planning a trip to Gregory's Bald in Cades Cove in a couple of weeks.

You were with a girl?!? Dave... :pout:

But in all seriousness...In any animal encounter situation its always important to keep your cool. Think before acting...which can be difficult when your heart is racing (I know) but in the end you will be better off!

Seeing that backpack a few posts back reminded me of my Deuter pack I got last winter. It has an adjustable torso on it and I'm dumb when it comes to adjusting it to fit me right. On the first outing with the pack my shoulders took most of the weight and were very sore the next day. Do I need to shorten the torso on the pack to get more of the weight on my hips? Any help would be appreciated.

I always tighten the hip belt first. The pack sits right above my hips basically. Then the shoulder straps followed by the straps the pull the pack itself closer to your body. It also is important to pack your bag right as well. I try to keep the heaviest items mid to lower part of the pack and as close to my body as possible.

Cool thank you but is there a way to adjust the torso on the pack to fit my torso?

your hip belt clip should cover your belly button. the adjustments on all packs are different....you may have to google it, i am only really familiar with kelty and some north face packs.
