When he was saying Eminem age, I doubt he was referring to the music. I saw it as more of a 'responsibility for yourself' type of view. Or lack of.

naaaaaa really? and i said its society and has nothing to do with eminem because he's irrelevant. ergo it didnt start in 1999, it started in the 60s and has gone down hill into todays welfare, no personal responsibility, no personal pride, the government owes me type mentality.

here i'll simplify it. if you wanna blame my generation, lets say people 15-30 then yes, that is a large problem with america. you want to dumb it down to eminem generation, thats retarded

I was chatting with the guy in charge of the service depts of a local auto mall (they own several dealerships of different makes) about the frame rust issue and had mentioned this particular thread.

He told me that fortunately he has not seen any problems like that in ANY of the dealerships that he takes care of. He said that it happens more East because of the salted roads. He saw none in the California vehicles that he deals with. None.

Uhhhhhhhhhhhh, Toyota should take responsibility for not manufacturing frames that have a normal lifespan like other automakers (I suppose they have with the buybacks, but the situation is still laughable). Even the most attentive owners won't neccessarily be able to make up for the fact that the frames weren't manufactured well. This is an ongoing problem with Toyota over many models/generations and it is ludicrous that they've done nothing to fix the problems.

If, like you say, it is the owner's responsibility to take care of a frame that was built/protected inferiorly then Toyota must first state "this frame has inadequate protection from the factory in order to save on costs and therefore requires more care by each owner". Then Toyota needs to outline exactly how to take care of it and put it in the maintenance schedule.

I'd like to know why-- cheap steel combined with inadequate protection? Why aren't the frames dipped in something prior to final truck assembly?

Not for nothing but what are you talking about? My frame is repainted top to bottom. The rest of the frame looks better then when came out of the factory. I only found that spot because I took sander down to metal. I doubt many people do something like that on 4 year old truck. You are in Cali so WTF are you comparing yourself too. Anybody in NE saying his frame is rusted either never drives his truck in winter or is full of $hit. I bet if I sanded his frame I would find the same spots. There is a reason why Toyota is replaceing frames on 1gen Tacoma, Tundras Sequioas and 4runners. 2Gen trucks are next on the list.
You recoat with POR15 tells me that you too lazy to clean your frame from rust. otherwise you would be recoating with normal paint.

EDIT Oh and I forgot, I asked you before how did you sanded and wirebrushed inside the boxed frame? I am Still waiting for answer.

What you're missing is the fact that they did improve quality. Yes the frames still rust in areas where they salt the roads, all do. HOWEVER the buybacks were rusting so bad they literally folded in half within that same time span. Also frame maintenance is nothing new, there is a 1975 popular mechanics issue that tells you about it and how salted roads destroy frames. That shows that for the past 35 YEARS salted roads have affected frames, not just toyota, and certainly not just tacomas.

I don't see any evidence that Toyota actually improved anything. Do you think these frames will last 10 years in the rust belt? I don't. Who wants to pay 30k for a truck that may last 10 years.

    TIME WILL TELL.

The correct answer to coating the inside of the boxed part of the frame is to use cavity wax. That shit can be sprayed in using a wand for hard to reach places. Oh and for the record, Toyota frame paint sucks and I am very disapointed that my two year old truck has rust underneath it and I live in a hot, arid (dry) climate. This is my one big FU to Toyota.

I don't have any good pictures right now... I am going to take pictures soon because I am going to completely paint my frame and axle housing. But to give you a general idea of what is going on is some surface rust developing in specific locations like a rash. It's worst in the following locations:

    1. Rear spring perches
    2. U-Bolt plates
    3. Rear spring hangers where riveted to frame
    4. End of axle housings
I agree with Oswego in that the weld points are a source of concern. See the stitch welds on the inside of the frame rail? This picture was when the truck was brand new. My stitch welds have some rust on them now. I think this is a defect in the manufacturing process. If the frame was coated properly, then rust should not develop. The axle housing paint is on par with the rest of the Toyota frame paint. There is plenty of surface rust forming there as well.

To be honest, I wouldn't worry about axle housing rust or u-bolt plates (get a u-bolt flip kit!)-- that is some thick steel. I think painting the frame and dowsing it with WD-40 or fluid film every once in a while helps a ton.
