Alright so yesterday morning i get up before i have to go in to work and get on to TW. Thats it i left for work and my computer was restarting itself over and over again... so im like WTF! I try to mess with it and it doesnt work so whatever i say fuck it and go to restore it (lose all my shit on my computer).

Well i let it restore while i go to sleep and i wake up thinking everything is going to be ok, i will just have nothing on my computer. WRONG! The computer trys to start up and goes to a blue screen saying that a missing file was corrupted and the computer cant boot up.

So with the two year warrenty already expired im FUCKED! So till i get my taxes back i am going to be stuck at the computer from work. After taxes, i am going to go buy another laptop. Any suggestions???

Recommendations for a laptop or a way to fix it?

Were you using Windows? I know this doesn't help you now but next time, try booting into safe mode (hold down the F8 Key while it boots and pick Safemode with networking) and picking a restore point prior to your problems. It's not destructive like a total restore. Sometimes it will boot into safe mode when it failed in regular mode.

Another thing you can try is to reinstall from another borrowed disk (upgrade or new disk). You can use the serial number that came with yours to activate it.

It could also be a memory problem. If you have extra memory in it, try removing it and installing again.

sounds like a windows or filesystem corruption issue. anyway i always go with dell laptops for myself and clients. inspirons are great for the price.

however you might be better off taking your existing one to a mom n' pop shop to have them reinstall your windows. just don't let them sell you any shit you don't need!

Keep an eye out on http://www.slickdeals.net. They'll post some great deals every now and then. I got a Dell Inspiron E1505 for half-off their regular price. Every now and then Dell will have a half-off laptops > $1500 (so $750).

What's the max you're willing to spend?

    All the normal TW BS
Rob's trying to say that it ain't broke, which I would have to agree. Either a memory error or hard drive problem. If safe mode doesn't work you could do a Windows reinstall.

All these are easy fixes. If you aren't comfortable doing them, then find one of your kid's schoolmates or ask someone at work for their kid. Try treating it like contracted work so the kid gets experience acting like a professional. As a kid, I did this for beans and it helped land me a summer job at Intel. Cheap for you, experience for them!

If you want something new, I second Dell. I don't care for HP or Gateway. Try the Dell Outlet for some deals.

Don't buy another PC if you're gonna replace -- buy something that's actually going to work in two years... here is a link for you: www.apple.com/mac

Had this happen to me about 6 months back on a desktop I have. A RAM stick went bad and the computer kept blue screening at start-up. Kept scratching my head until a buddy came over and realized the problem right off the bat. Computer works great now!

here are some codes that will save you $$$ bucks when/if you have to buy a new one. Some of the codes you can combine to get additional savings. At the time I bought my HP a couple months back i was able to combine a couple codes and got almost an extra $750 off.

    http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=4639

Other option is to google discount codes for what brand your looking at.

If you're running XP - boot the system off a XP CD. When it gets to the screen that asks if you want to install windows or enter the repair console, choose R for repair console. Type in CHKDSK /P, let it run. If it finds problems, type in CHKDSK /R (that one takes a long while to run).

If you're running Vista, hit F8 quickly when you see that windows dot start to come up on the screen. Choose "repair my computer".

If it's a case of simple file corruption on the hard drive that may get you up and running again. If you can get back into windows, put the operating system (xp or vista) CD in the drive, in the Run field type SFC /SCANNOW. That will overwrite any corrupted OS critical files with known good ones.

I made a quick 60 bucks doing a CHKDSK just today.

the one thing i'll give to vista is that it's better at fixing boot issues than xp is.

QFT. And you can choose a restore point from the F8 menu in Vista. Very convenient.
