If one can't afford a Taco, what is the next best option?

I know most of you are probably biased here and only have one answer "just get a tacoma some how" (heh, I don't blame ya ) but I've been looking for used taco's and people seem to be selling them for a lot or they just have that good of a resale value...

I'm looking to spend no more than 9k on a 1st gen Taco, preferable with around 80-100k. I've seen people selling them - say a 02' ext cab (need the ext cab) with maybe 150k for like $11-12k

I've seen other trucks - like an 07' GMC Canyon with 66k miles for $10k OBO.

If y'all had to suggest other similar size and performance trucks other than Tacomas, what would they be?

Stay away from the small GMC/Chevy truck line. Their larger trucks are great, but the Canyon/Colorado line suffers a bit. Check Nissan maybe?

 

My pops has a 04 Colorado 5cyl, its been a pretty good truck he dosent wheel it. 150000 and still going strong.

 

I wouldnt get a colorado, ive only heard bad things about them with high miles on them

My pops has been decent, nothing major as far as the drivetrain except it eats lightbulbs like crazy. He has said he would never buy a chevrolet again.

There's a community around here where it's mostly retirees. I mean it's a whole town that caters to their needs with busing, rides and other means of transportation.

I have told my friends to search the ads for that area. The older folks will usually have a shop do all of their work in a preventative way because they don't ever want to be stranded or have issues down the line. Some are losing their license and their kids sell the vehicles fast and cheap before mom or pops finds out. Some don't even need their car anymore because they use golf carts to buzz around. Some have passed on and their cars are included in estate sales...

You still might be able to find your Tacoma in your price range.

 

go with a older 4 runner. or look for a older taco 95.5-00 but it will most likely have like 150k on it. i got my 97 ext cab 4x4 2.7l for 4500

got my 02 with 190k for 9k

 

mine also had 128k

 

I bought mine about a year ago with 61k miles on it for $10,900. If you look around you can find one in your range. Dont settle for a shitty truck

 

I'm sure with some more looking, you'll be able to score a Tacoma within your price range. To answer your question though, personally, I would look for a great conditioned Pre 1990 Toyota pickup and use the rest of the money to get that thing off road ready.
