JL vs Alpine 8"sub, opinions?

I have used the search function and read a lot and still thought i would post this to the group..

So for my access cab i am building a small enclosure for the storage bin, I'm thinking of either a JL sub or the Alpine type-R 8"

the question i have is the low end RMS... how exactly does that come into play, will the alpines which run from 150-350 rms need to be loud to sound good? and the JL sound good at a lower volume (35-300 rms)


I'm not looking to blow the doors off or vibrate anything, just a nice full sound.

I installed a clarion CZ401 HU.. have an alpine mono amp for the sub, and am putting in Hertz 6.5's in the front that will eventually be amped.

So which should i got with and why? Thanks! really looking forward to having this project complete!!

 

No first hand comparison to offer; however...

There's a guy over at DIYMAMobileAudio raving on the new model 8" Type R from Alpine. I might be mistaken, but I don't think there is much new think in the JL product, albeit it was good for its time (this is not a cheap shot at JL, I just installed one of their amps into my truck).

That guy is certainly gushing about them wow.. if they are really as good as he makes them out to be, thats what I'm getting!!

One of the big problems is I have a hard time finding people that carry 8" subs to even hear any of the speakers.

I'm getting close to getting all my crap installed and getting anxious!!

 

THAT I understand. Over the holiday weekend I installed an Alpine PXE-H660 processor and a JL Audio XD 600/6 amp.

Speakers (Seas Prestige line) are still in the closet. Haven't even begun to think about how much bass I will want/need.

 

Also...

I'm building a fiberglass enclosure for the storage bin, so it will be in a sealed box and powered by an alpine MRP-M500. so... 300 watts at 4ohms, and 500 at 2.

not much response here... and of course nobody has one hooked up to hear.

The number of people who rave about JL outnumber the alpine people so I pulled the trigger on the JL.

 

lots of first hand here: I would recommend JL over alpine all day long when it comes to subwoofers and speakers. And i think highly of both because those are the 2 brands i most commonly recommend. When it comes to headunits, nothing beats alpine in my experience

 

I had an 8" JL 8W7 in my colorado with 500 w rms going to it. It sounded absolutely fantastic. Too bad I saw this thread too late, as the sub is just sitting around waiting for a buyer.

You won't be dissapointed with the JL.

 

quite personally i would go with with the JL because they are high quality and since your not looking looking to rattle any doors i would go with a w3 not a w7 since the w7 are one of the loudest subs you can get....and how much you lookin to get rid of that w7 SMKYTXN

 

The great thing, and maybe the bad thing, about car audio is the variety of opinions.

IMO the current generation Alpine 8" Type R (Type R shallow for 10" & 12") surpass the quality of JL Audio woofers unless we're talking the TW5, W6, or W7, models.

The W7 model can play quite loud, but it's also an excellent SQ woofer as well - but then again it (and the TW5) should be for the price.

People should also consider stepping out of the car audio world and look at speakers from the professional build houses, such as the Peerless XXLS woofers, or the Dayton Audio HO series. Maybe not generally known, but build houses, such as Scan-Speak, Seas, Peerless, Morel, build for many brands beside there own. The fabled Alpine F1 Status speakers were built for Alpine by Scan-Speak; the rightly famous, albeit older version, of the Diamond Audio Hex line were re-branded from the Eton build house. I'm looking for $350 for the sub without the box. The box is for a single cab Colorado so it wouldn't do anyone any good here. Make me an offer.
