Not to get in any e-peen fights...

if it's a memory problem, it doesn't matter if it's mac or pc.
On an old mac in high school, we were able to drag the hard drive to the trash can, which nuked the computer.
in a recent showdown between mac, ubuntu, and vista, a mac was hacked the fastest.
my ipod locks up more the a computer running Windows ME

So there's no need for smelling your rear end. Mac or pc, it depends on what you do with it.

What model is your current laptop?

You would boot the cd rom to do the fix. If it doesn't boot to the cdrom (goes to the Windows bootup instead), you'll have to go into your bios to make sure the cdrom is set as your first boot option. I've seen some computers notify you with a "Hit any key to boot cdrom" option on bootup when the computer senses a bootable disk. If you see those words when it's booting, just hit the space bar and it should boot the cdrom.

If you don't see that and it won't boot the cdrom go into the bios. To get into the bios, you'd hit either the DEL key or the F2 key when it first starts booting up. It usually tells you what key to hit while it's booting but you have to be quick (before the Windows load screen pops up). If I don't know which it is, I usually just alternate between the two repeatedly while it boots.

Can't be completely dead, the F8 screen wouldn't have come up. At this point I pull the hard drive, hook it to another system and CHKDSK it that way. You may not have the tools to do that though. The laptop may also have a proprietary HD controller in it that needs its own driver loaded before the HD can be found. Fix for that, without getting into slipstreaming a XP CD with the driver, is to use the restore disks that came with the laptop.

You can get recovery disks from the manufacturer, some let you download an .iso image so you can make your own.

Far as a new hard drive, you can get 60GB IDE drives for 40 bucks all over ebay. Not sure on SATA drives, I rarely get machines in to fix with dead SATA ones so I don't look for them often.

How old is the laptop (not how long you've had it)? Generally speaking more than 3 or 4 years old it's gonna be an IDE. But don't count on that too much.

Take it to a GOOD computer shop, they can tell you if it's IDE or SATA. Just don't buy it from them, I worked at a computer shop and their markup was nearly 100%. Get one from Newegg.com. If you watch them take the old one out you'll see how to put the new one it, it isn't hard (but the drives are delicate so be careful).

Then you can do a fresh XP install. But if you use your buddies' XP disks make sure they are the same version (IE: XP Home OEM or XP Pro OEM) as the Microsoft sticker on the bottom of the laptop, or you're gonna have to call Microsoft and hope you get Rashid from Bangledash so you can snow him into getting a new activation key. If it is the same version you can use the key off the sticker. Remember this will be an OEM version...if you try to use a Retail (as in bought in a store in a box) version the key on your machine will NOT work.

There has to be someone near you from this forum who can do that. It's usually pretty simple. I'd hate for you to pay someone to do it.

You can also google your computer's model (e.g. Dell Inspiron e1505). It should give you an idea of what came with it stock (ide or sata).

100GB SATA on ebay is about 40 bucks and shipping. On Newegg they're 100 bucks...what's odd about that is 160GB drives are around $70.

100GB IDE on ebay runs about $60 plus shipping. 160GB on Newegg are $65.

100GB must be an oddball size for laptop drives. Don't matter though, a 160 will work just fine.

I'd be happy to fix it up for ya, and I wouldn't charge a TW member. Just send enough to ship it back to you.

    It's a 100gb SATA drive.

They're all over eBay for around $40 shipped. Or you can go with a newer, much bigger drive for not much more ($62 for a 320 gb, $110 for a 500gb plus shipping). I've used this vendor in the past:
