auto trans questions

I have a 07 Tacoma with 30,000 miles on it. Yesterday I went over a speed bump that was headed down hill. When I got back on the gas right after the bump my truck sounded like it reved up and wasn't really going anywhere. It was almost as if it was in neutral. My wife and I both have noticed it in both an 05 and 07 taco's we have owned. Is this just a characteristic of these tranny's or is there something wrong?

 

Did you come off the ground?

 

no i noticed if you brake pretty sudden or on a constant firm brake and then press the gas right after you go over, its just the tranny going to the beginning of 1st gear. Assisted Engine Braking

 

I know what you mean mine does the same thing. I don't know if it right or not. But I have the same issue 36000 miles.

 

My 05 does this but my 09 has yet to show any signs?

 

does it do it when your coasting down a steep hill? like slow down really fast or downshift fast?

 

well I have noticed it most when going around a corner fast and getting back on the gas slowly, or over certain kinds of terrain. It sounds like it is hung between 1st and 2nd or in neutral, then when it shifts again it kinda surges forward. I dunno, just haven't had any other truck transmission act like this.

 

My 05 has problems shifting going down hill. I have to get the RPM's up before it finally shifts into a higher gear. Toyota has sent me two owner surveys over the last four years. I have expressed this issue though the survey in detail but never received any response. Further more I haven't followed up with my local dealer.

 

Yeah I know what you are talking about its just the ECU trying to find a good gear... and like I said before it could also be a little bit of Assisted Engine Braking......

 

The Tacomas tranny is made more for pulling and handling that immense torque. so instead of shifting all through the higher gears it (family sedans, etc.) the ECU takes hold of that gear until you go UP the hill... Which in most cases you do.

 

These trucks are kinda weird in how they run sometimes....

I'll be sitting at a stop light or drive-thru window with my foot on the brake for a period of time. As soon as I let my foot off the brake (no gas), the thing jumps up in idle a good bit. It's weird..... And I know, just sitting still - it idles up, idles down, idels up, idles down....like 500rpm's between the two or more. Turning the fans (no AC) on or off causes it to idle up.

I have an 09 Taco TRD sport with an v6 engine and auto trans. I have the same problem and the bump is not the cause. If I would lift off the gas and coast through a turn and apply the fuel I get the netural feeling with the RPM's going up to 2300 for about 1-2 seconds. It will then shift into low at the hight end. I wish someone would tell me it's normal.

 

I drove over a huhe snow bank the other day and when i came off it on the other side my truck did the same thing, i thought it was in neutral. It was wierd! I have 24000 miles on her. Shifts good otherwise.

 

Thanks for the info. I don't consider this a problem with my Tacoma.How did you come across this information?

 

Mine does exactly what everyone is talking about. I just put some new tire's on it and thought maybe they were the cause. But really couldn't figure out why. It was starting to give me a complex LOL. I really enjoy all the great information that is on this site.

 

I usually just put my truck in neutral when going down hill. But then again Florida only has about 9 hills so...
