took a road-trip from orlando to north carolina, and back this weekend, and on the way back i noticed a pretty horrible burning smell coming from the engine compartment. No smoke or fire thankfully, but its got me worried. Has anyone else had this issue, or might know whats up??

i looked and couldnt find anything, and toyota is closed tonight....:confused:

    help??

did it smell like rotten eggs? if it did it is just poor quality gasoline. I believe it is the catalytic converter. Poor fuel will not burn effecient.

Rotten eggs = catalytic converter, yes, but that would come from the exhaust. Check around the block for any visible signs of oil or sludge, (head gaskets or the like), sound like your burning oil somewhere.

Did you change your oil yourself. You may have spilt some and not realized it. I took mine to express oil when I first got the truck, and a girl changed the oil. It had to have been her first vehicle. The oil went all over the bottom of the engine, and she didn't even put a new oil filter in the first time, but she was mad that I stood over her and watched everything she did. I was so ticked off, and I made them clean the engine and all the excess. I was sick to think that it was going to have the smell of burning oil. :puke:

Unfortunatly its not oil. I kinda dont mind that smell. no signs of oil sludge, or anything.

it did smell like spoiled egg a little, and it happened when i decided to put 93 octane on the way back. Would i need to replace the cat, or just keep the the cheap-a$$ fuel i usually use??

I know with my tacoma if I put in "bad fuel" or the cheaper gas in town thats when I smell it. It may have just been poor quality fuel from your road trip. Your catalytic converter is fine, just go back to what you were using before. Mine usually smells better the followning tank.
    Good luck
