Dont know what power amp to get

I just ordered a polk audio sr124 sub but dont know what amp to get. peak power is 1400watts and the rms is 700watts. impedance is 4ohms

Does that mean i need at least a 1400 watt amp or can i get away with running a high quality JL or PA 500watt amp? I have very little knowledge about wattage and i dont even know how the eff ohms fit in to this equation so could some one enlighten me please? Thanks!

 

Wow, almost 7-1/2" deep with a vented pole piece (8-1/2" deep box?) - where you putting that?

Even if you don't need the following info, it might be handy for others...

700 Watts RMS is the power rating that will cause the motor to safely avoid thermal damage from long term use at that level.

1400 Watts peak is the power rating that will cause the motor to safely avoid mechanical breakdown from over extending itself.

A high quality 500 Watt amp will easily under the RMS rating, and it's highly unlikely (IMO) to exceed the peak of 1400. Going from 500 to 700 RMS Watts will not be all that much difference in volume - would probably have to have two running side-by-side for an A-B comparison to really detect the difference.

If it were me, and the price was about the same, and I could afford it, I would go for the JL Audio HD 750/1. Driving the PA SR124 - with two 4-Ohm voice coils):

JL 750/1=750 Watts at 2 Ohms with THD <0.03% at 12 up to 14.4 volts

PA 1200.1=800 Watts at 2 Ohms with THD <1.0% at 14.4 volts power (not spec'ed, but probably around 600 at 12Volts).

So at the 13.5Volts I typically see on my Scanguage, the JL Audio amp will deliver the same or more RMS power at a lower distortion level. And since the JL uses a more highly regulated power supply, it will be capable of driving the sub louder when the engine is at idle. Hence my vote for the JL.

 

What type of box is it going in?
