I hope not, but some people seem to want to bury their heads in the sand and whine about how violence is not the answer. In most cases I would agree, try to avoid the fight (run) but when confrontation is inevitable, you'd better be ready to take care of business.

I've been seeing a few discussions on this subject on different forums lately. It's hard to defend from a mob. You always need to keep situational awareness.

Good point...and unfortunately, even sometimes, situational awareness wont help you

For instance, the case referenced in Columbia, SC...the victim was walking in a well-lit area with video surveillance in an area of the city that people pass thru and walk around in regularly...in fact its THE go-to spot for college kids

    http://www.wistv.com/Global/story.asp?S=14965429

While it could be argued that he could've been home earlier etc...we all know that college kids will not stop going to bars late at night...especially when they are close enough to walk through

'Well, sometimes you get the bull and sometimes the bull gets you.' This is one reason why I carry a firearm at all times. It may not be able to save me from every situation but at least I'd have a fighting chance.

That really bothers me. I wish the saying "what goes around comes around" was true but I doubt anything will ever happen to those kids that did this.

Damn, 13, 14, 15 and 16 yr olds following the lead of a 19 yr old... That's just sad. If you're going to stay out late at the bars, go in groups! Even the most capable person doesn't stand much of a chance alone against 8 people when you're half in the bag. Too bad for that kid but glad they caught the people who did it!

I know that particular victim wasn't drunk and was with friends. I was responding to Tigerfan's comment about college kids going to bars, staying out late and walking home.

having recently moved back to chicago from las vegas, the attacks in streeterville have been sobering for me. no concealed carry here with very little hope of ever seeing it, quite frankly I can't wait to get out of here and back to living where I can arm myself legally.

My wife gets annoyed with me being "paranoid" all the time, but I keep drilling her with "situational awareness" every chance I get. We live in Memphis, which is, in places, a pretty dangerous town, so I try to stay on my toes as much as possible.

One friend who took a wrong turn and stopped a policeman to ask directions was told, "...turn around, drive that way until you get to the freeway. Don't stop, don't even slow down. If someone jumps out in front of your car and tries to stop you, run them over and keep going..." When a local cop tells someone something like that, you know things are bad.

This is exactly why I want to move out of illinois. We are now the only state without a concealed carry law.

this is why i always have at least a knife. i know it's somewhat futile, but dammit...i'll get a good stick on at least one guy...if i'm on the ground, i'm going for achilles/ankles/femoral. bottom line: if this happens to me, i will most likely come out worse off than the attackers (or possibly dead) - but they won't forget the 6'4" guy who went batshit crazy on them.

A buddy of mine got lost in Detriot and was told something very similar by a local cop when he asked for directions.
