This might be a stupid question but...

Ok, I am not an idiot but this is my first lifted truck of any kind. I got a 3" lift, 18" wheels, and bigger tires (I can't remember the size off the top of my head) on my 2011 Tacoma and the tires rub when I turn. Not super bad going forward (unless I am handling some gnarly off road stuff like, say, my driveway) but bad in reverse. I have her back at the shop today and told the tech that I didn't want the tires to rub at all. To which he replied: "All lifted trucks tires rub a little unless you go with tires that are so small that they aren't going to look good" or words to that effect. Now, again, this is my first lifted truck but that just doesn't sound right to me. Am I being fed a line of shit to get me to go away or is that the truth?

 

Well we really need to know the size of the tires, and the backspacing of the rims, in order to help.

If you are running 285/65/18's, you will definitely need to trim some fender well plastic, and possibly chop the cab mount, in order to stop the rubbing, even with rims with the ideal backspacing of 4.5".

 

Its pretty much the truth.

Try to figure out where it is rubbing. If it is rubbing on the rear of the front fender or the front bumper, that is fairly easy to trim. It could be rubbing on the body mount, which can be "chopped". Search "cab mount chop".

Either trim, or go down a tire size.

 

well it depends... you will have to trim your fenders some because i did mine but mine rubbed real bad.. but then all i did was get some wheel spacers and that fixed it. so maybe just get some wheels spacers first and you might not have to trim at all...

 

note: I am probably an extreme case here because I run mud-terrains with a little more tread. In this photo you can see where I got rid of the entire front quarter of the inner fender. On the backside there is nothing easy you can do, you must cut the cab mounts.

 

Ok, the tires are 285/65/R18.

Turns out my concern was for naught. The tires were rubbing not on the cab mount as I thought but on a bit of fender and wheel well liner. Those have been trimmed and the Problem has been taken care of. Thank you all for your help.
