Well, still not happy with the wierwolf in the back. Rode some nice trail today. Lot of roots and trees. I dropped the air down a bit mid ride and it seemed to help. Maybe I am expecting too much? I don't like doing burnouts and then losing it going up steep hills :( I think I am going to need to invest in disks If I keep this pace up. I am killing my V brakes and getting some fade on heavy downhill sections. Ughhh. No more money!!

I don't have the money! I would probably stick with mechanical if I did. I tend to go down a lot lol. I am not even sure I can put them on the back of my bike, I'll have to see. I have threads on the new fork so I know they can be put up front.

sometimes. The front wheel will want to pull up on me if I get into a steep climb once in a while. I checked, I had 30 lbs in the rear. I am still pretty new to single tracks so learning. I am not sure how you can easily go over roots while seated and keep momentum though

I haven't had a better wheel set. The design and look is awesome. And on top of all that the hub is super loud.

Had to take the Schhwin out since my regular wouldn't hold air and it was getting too late to put a new tube in. For a junk beater bike it accelerated like a bat out of hell out of the hole and climbs compared to the FS!

SwingCase, driver side. PVC Bike rack. Aftermarket stereo.

Of these, I would pick the Giant.

But, with that said, I would come up with a hard budget, then hit up a few local shops. Go in and look for clearance items, used bikes, etc. Specialized will be introducing their 2012 hardtails next month, so deals on last years models should be coming up.

Also, ask about a discount. $400 bucks in the register is better than a $479 bike on the show room floor.... (FWIW, I just got a 23% discount on a bike I bought a week ago for my wife. It was quite a bit more expensive, but they dropped the price an additional 10% off their "sale" price when I asked)

What kind of riding do you plan on doing with it? Three things, imo, you should look for on a beginner bike-

1-light frame. You can always add/swap components.
2-100 mm fork. With 100 mm it should keep you happy until you upgrade.
3-Disk brakes. I got my bike before they were around. I would only be able to put them on my new front fork, and even then I would need new brake levers, a new wheel, and the caliper/disk. I am looking at 300 bucks just for one disk brake setup...where most of the new bikes already have them. You may want to up your budget by 100 bucks if you can.

Also make sure they come with a decent tire - 2.1 sized and brand. They can make all the difference in the world.
