i did this mod with a couple 12 volt relays that cost me about 2 bucks each, some wiring, tape, a few tricks, and my trusty soldering iron =) i even have a switch for them!

Newbie here. Just got my 2011 base model. Is the mod going to work for 2011's?

This mod will work just fine on a 2011 Tacoma without DRLs. 2009s and up have a few more wiring harnesses to contend with, but it's not a big deal.

You can check out the pics from my install on my 2009 Tacoma here (i.e. I'm maxed out on the total # of wires you'll have to contend with): http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/te...unning-lights-install-oem-14.html#post3076251

Thanks - just installed mine. For whatever reason, I couldn't get complete access to the back of the panel and had to refer to the pictures and work by feel. That back plug was a real pain to remove. I'm glad I went back to the write-up to see that the lights don't work in park or with parking brake on with an automatic -- I almost tore everything apart again. Thanks again!

so i did this mod and it turned out awesome, but when i first took the lower panel off i found a blue clip that was just hanging there that was next to the wiring for my mirriors and another plug below the fuse box. can anyone tell me what these would go to?

The first one looks like it might go to a trailer brake controller. I have a trailer brake controller installed in my truck, and the first picture looks very much like the connector to the controller (the black connector to the left of the emergency brake is for my trailer brake controller):

Not sure on the other one, but your last picture shows some non-factory wiring, so something was added at some point (security system?).

when i first pulled out the dash....the blue clip looked like it would be going to on of the buttons for what I'm assuming might be for traction control or DAC

My trailer brake controller just clips into place and thus is very easy to pull off and put away so I don't kick it when I get in and out of the truck. When I pull the controller off for storage, I tuck the connector up in the dash to keep it out of the way (so it would end up right next to the mirror/Traction/DAC controls). It usually takes me a couple tries to get the connector to stay up out of the way. When I did the DRL install, I tucked most of the wiring into the kickplate so it didn't have a tendency to fall/hang down so much.

The "professionals" that installed the trailer brake did a good job installing it (they even sheathed the wires to the controller), but they left about 3 feet of slack:confused:. I don't know why they did that, but maybe that's so I can move it to the passenger side or something.

Thanks NovaGuy! That does indeed look like the DAC connector.
Now that I'm looking at it again, the white one looks like it might be the plug for the mirror control.

i just realized that i'm telling you about the pictures that you put up....hahahaha. anyways i just talked to my friend who is a mechanic for toyota of orange and he said that i wouldn't be able to hook up the DAC anyway since my truck didn't come with the option only the wiring. Still trying to figure out what the white clip is. think you might be right about it being for a brake controller.

K I just did this finally. One of your rules does not hold true for me. Mine comes on the minute the truck is on. It doesn't care if its in drive or not. Signals work, goes out when lights come on otherwise. I have foglight mod, doubt that affects it but its possible.

    Testing for heat buildup now.

There is heat building up in my lights, but knowing that 250 degrees will not melt these headlights.... I don't think I will have any problems.

Out of curiosity, how difficult is it to remove factory installed DRL?

Is it simply changing the relay behind the fuse box?

You can disable the DRLs by cutting a specific wire (but for the life of me, I can't find which one).
However, if you'll pay for shipping, I'll send you my old factory parts and you can just reverse the instructions on this page and have original Toyota parts (i.e. covered by your warranty if you still have one). :D

Just replace the relay.... Just plug and play. You could probably swap the piece with someone who wants the DRL.

Haven't done it... just got the info from the beginning of this thread.... go read the first few posts and it says how to put the relay in. Reverse to replace with the non-drl relay (am gonna order the relay one day )

It took me about 40 minutes, but that was with taking a bunch of pictures. If I hadn't been messing with the camera, it probably would have only been about 30 minutes.
If I had to do it again, it would take less time now that I know exactly what I'm doing.
