I'm getting lazy in my old age so it is worth it to me to be able to flip the switch into 4wd when I am in the snow, but I used to get around just fine with 2wd and chains if I needed them. If the money is worth more to you than the time it will take you to chain up on the odd snow day (And your manhood isn't dependent on having an x-fer case ) save yourself a few bucks and get the prerunner.

front wheel 2 wheel drive in a sedan I assume?
Hardly comparable to 2 wheel rear wheel drive in a truck.

I don't know anyone around me that doesn't have a 4x4 for the winter. If you are lucky enough to have good weather, well, get a 4x4 anyway :D

So based on what I've learned from TW and scanning craigslist for the past month I think I will wait until I can afford the 4x4... The prerunner is just not enough savings (from what i've seen in my area) to warrant the reduced usability of the truck. Unfortunately Ive had a few financial setbacks this month (speeding tickets, new tags ), and my saving schedule is already pretty slow... so I'm looking at the end of this year for a reasonable timeframe to buy a $20k truck. Which sucks. I want it now! :(

oregon huh you get a lot of snow up there? if so wait and buy the 4x4. i'm positive you will like it!

my regular cab started life as a stripped out 4cyl 4x4 and a few grand over the last year and now it can hang with the best of them off road or at the car show. this site will have you spending money like a drunken sailor at least i did.

good luck and let us all know what you settle on.

I keep changing my mind :facepalm:so there is the possibility, if I happen to find the right TRD Offroad PreRunner at just the right price, I'll get it. But it would have to be a very good deal.

Think of how many PreRunners you see in the PacNW, then think of how many 4x4s you see. There's more 4x4s for a reason. :)

Well that's the thing... I see lots of PreRunner badges around here. Tons of 'em in fact. And probably 70% of the used market around here are prerunners. So that really puts a premium on 4x4 trucks :(

But they're all expensive. I suppose their high resale value is both a blessing and a curse...

I will continue to search for a 4x4, but I will glance at the TRD OffRoad preRunners too. Like I said, if there is a GREAT deal.....

I don't know anything about the weather in Oregon but if you get snow you will like having 4X4. I lived w/o it for most of my life but now that I have it I'd never go back.

    Soon...
Just go with the 4x4. You wont regret getting it.
Why go with the PreRunner and "think" it will be fine. It would suck to fork over the money and regret not getting a 4x4..... just my opinion

I got a Prerunner OR package and don't have any regrets because like you, I don't take if off road much. Look online at Prerunners off roading and you'll be surprised what they can do. Always have a good set of tires and you'll be fine. It's all about what you really will use it for, not what you could use it for. My previous truck was a 4x4 and I never used it; it was a waste of money. But everybody has their own opinion. Good Luck!

Dude I've been in the PacNW for a week and have seen nothing but 4x4s. :p

I've only seen three PreRunners, three in downtown Portland and one in downtown Vancouver. :p
