Yeah I find it curious that he has big enough garage with drainage to handle washing the truck. Thats something you dont see often.

    Good for you

The frame falling apart shouldn't be contigent on whether or not one can afford a heated garage

You're right. However the fact remains, if you can wash your truck you're more likely to avoid problems.

Ahh yes... you are right...it was 2005 when pathfinders went to the F-alpha platform shared with their pickups..

But don't hoot the horn for toyota frames being garbage... just search for nissan or pathfinder or frontier and frame rot or frame rust and someone else would come to the conclusion you're lucky. My friend's '04 Frontier looks like some of those pictures a few posts back, and another friend's 2001 Tacoma had a frame that looked pretty darn good before Toyota made him an offer he couldn't refuse earlier this year. They both were driven in the same Pennsylvania rust belt... but he washed his truck frequently.

Rusting frames are a fact of life. If you live in the rust belt, it happens. If you drive on the shore... it happens. The more you drive it in salty conditions the worse/faster it happens. Drive a on gravel roads? the rock blasting beats through paint faster and it's worse. Drive a lot in gumbo? If you don't wash it traps moisture and it's worse. Frequent washing, especially after a snow event or shore fishing event, does wonders to slow it.

Point is: all of the stories in this thread... both horror and good... mean nothing to me without direct knowledge about how the specimen was treated and driven. Just saying it has had rust treatments and re-painting means nothing because....

here's the real kicker: put rust treatments on top of a rust spot (like OP apparently did) and you're doomed to early major problems (like pitting and rust-through) if you don't stay on top of it with seasonal maintenance to find bubbles, chip/sand and repaint. Just repainting not only doesn't help but the ever thickening layers make it harder to spot the bubbling as the rust eats away underneath. IMO, OP should consider himself lucky he caught it and can fix the spot he found since he's never demonstrated penetration.

I go out and look over my 2007's frame driven in PA rust belt but washed frequently and don't see anything but very minor surface rust on the frame (but DID spot major corrosion on my sidestep fasteners after only one season!) and really have difficulty understanding all this panicky PMS'ing. Nothing's been said here to make me think current Toyota frames are any more susceptible to rust than another truck. Just a bunch of over-heated hype based on anecdotal evidence... just like those guys whining on the Nissan forums about their frame-rot.

Would you explain to me your opinion of "well maintained" ? Back in the 50's and 60's you changed your oil at 3,000 miles. (you were probably adding more before that because engines leaked off the lot) You changed your antifreeze at least once a year, again probably adding more as the cooling wasn't what it is today. You bled your brakes and power steering. You topped off your battery. You checked your tire pressure. Your transmission fluid. Whats even better was a lot of people checked those every time they filled up with gas. You waxed your car 2-3 times a year, checked your frame if you lived in the salt belt. If you did all this and more you're vehicle would average about 150,000 miles before needing "major" repairs.
The maintenance of modern vehicles is much, much less, but is more than just changing your oil. Basic maintenance and area specific maintenance are also 2 different things. And if you really think this is a toyota only problem, enjoy your bent raptor frames, your rusting nissan or ford frames.

My buddy has a 2008 with 40k on it and its frame is rusting. Its completely stock and never been off road. The truck in in Ga so it is not exposed to rust, humidity or anything like that. I have a laundry list of issues with MY truck also, no rust yet though....

BOSTON -- It's been a tough two weeks for Toyota.

First, a dangerous problem with floor mats led to the largest recall ever.

And federal officials are now investigating a rust problem with 2000 and 2001 Toyota Tundras that Team 5 Investigates first exposed last April.

"The frame is cracked," said (name) who owns a 2000 Tundra with only 89,000 miles on it. "And down here, the leaf springs on this side are so corroded that they're broken."

(Name) said the frame rusted prematurely on his 2000 Tundra as well. He thought his truck was falling apart at the car wash.

"I could literally just hear the metal chips flying off," he said.

Team 5 Investigates found a pattern among more than two dozen complaints on file with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration regarding Tundra trucks made in 2000 and 2001.

Owners wrote "metal shearing off in large sheets," "the rot caused the frame to break in half," and "poked my finger right through the cross-member."

"It's aggressive corrosion that essentially makes the truck unsafe," (Name) said.

In response to our Team 5 Investigation, NHTSA opened a defects investigation into 2000 and 2001 Tundras for "severe corrosion of the frame rail and rear cross-member." The safety concern impacts an estimated 218,000 trucks.

"This is not a cosmetic issue," said (Name), an auto safety expert. "This is a safety problem that can lead to the collapse of the vehicle and lead to loss of control crashes on the road."

This is the second serious rust problem Toyota has had with its frames.

In 2008, Team 5 Investigates discovered more than 800,000 Tacomas built between 1995 and 2000 did not have adequate corrosion protection causing frames to disintegrate.

Toyota subsequently offered a buy-back program at 150 percent of the truck's Kelley Blue Book value.

But so far, Toyota has made no offer to Tundra owners.

"They recognize the problem in other vehicles," (Name) said. "They're fixing the problem with other vehicles by buying them back. They need to be doing the same thing for the Tundra."

Toyota did not respond to calls and e-mails seeking comment on the federal investigation.

Frame problems? Gee I don't know what everyone is so concerned about. Sounds perfectly normal to me.

Don't be... the tip off is the article's lead-in, alluding to the floor mat recall related to the 'uncommanded acceleration' debacle which NTSB declared a non-problem and never was one.

Tip off? What tip off? Save for the second sentence the entire article was all about rust issues, not floor mats.

You can selective-read if you want but the issues are there in plain sight. As they say, you can't make this stuff up.
