Do they not teach critical reading skills in schools these days? Any news article is read like an upside-down pyramid: the important information is conveyed in the first one or two paragraphs. Everything else is fill.

The tip-off: by equating this to the floor-mat recall at the very beginning, the author is suggesting the rust issue probably isn't real either.

The rest supports the gist of the article with anonymous, unamed people throughout making overly dramatic, highly inflammatory declarations. Toyota's problem is on of perception: they have a very tough PR battle to wage whenever there is any perceived issue since they are the world leader.

Learn to recognize when you're being manipulated, the real purpose of that article is to serve as an advert for their investigative news team, to boost viewership and therefore ad revenue. It's hyperbole, pure and simple.

Since people here are hell-bent on generalizing from a few isolated incidents, some with questionable maintenance practices, please tell me how should I perceive the lack of rust on my frame after three winters in the NE rust-belt salt/slush/brine wonderland?

To which I've done nothing more than wash it.

    Oh.. it parks outdoors.

I would say that you are lucky , because I wash my frame and undercarriage at a car wash weekly in the winter and if you look at most Tacoma frames around here , including some of the new trucks still on the lot , they exhibit surface rust .

I'm not generalizing or making anything up , just stating my experience .

Perhaps you haven't perceived, that you haven't found the rust yet.

Maybe I am lucky cause I look under my friends 5yo Frontier and what do I see: rust. Look under the 2008 or 2007 (never can tell exactly) F150 parked next to me most days and what do I see: rust (not so much... but it's there, at least as much as mine!) Look under the 2001 Chevy something or other and what do I see GREAT BROWN GOBS OF FLAKING CRUSTY RUST.. fALLing off in sheets. making tinkling creaky noises as the flakes drop. (got that from the article... great journalism huh?)

I guess I'm lucky... or just thankful I got a Tacoma maybe. And even more thankful my daddy raised me to have some common sense.

Perhaps because it was copy/pasted it doesn't show the names but if you click on the link, the people in the article are named, there's pics of the rust and there's a news video. Granted this came out in 2009 in regards to 2000 and 2001 Tundras.

    omg rust

If you're scared of rust then sell it. Better yet where salt and other corrosive shit is used, sue the state or provience where you live for destroying your personal property. You make the choice where you live.

Where is the OP. There is, in fact, a weld of some sort on that frame. Did you buy the truck used or new?

Yeah... I googled it and found some more on the topic on Tundraworld.

My point is this: even in the best of cases rust accumulation on vehicle frames is highly variable. There's just way, way, way too many things that have effects on it, including owners well-intended but harmful actions, so looking at anecdotal accounts and trying to generalize is just plain inflammatory.

That 'investigative news team' doubtless knows it but doesn't care. They're just cashing in on the 'uncommanded acceleration' scam to sell click-throughs and drive viewership. All these whine threads do is fuel the flames with things like that since 90% of people never look under their truck until they read about it and are then surprised, not knowing EVERY truck frame out there has at least SOME rust!

If you don't like your Tacoma dump it; I don't give a holy crap. You don't even need an excuse. Threads like this just make me want people to stop ragging on this and get on to something meaningful.

i hate to be the one to say it but, my nissan never showed any rust at all. the reason i say this is because i have heard it blamed on japanese steel but, i believe it to be the coatings i drove my frontier for like 3 years and it looked absolutely brand new everywhere i looked.

my truck has little rust spots all over underneath wtf. i have to say that i did not expect to see that at all and if this continues to progress this will be my last toyota seeing as i live in an area that gets snow.

OP was fixing his parking brake on Green October :D. No its not the weld although I can understand some may think that. Up close it's a

huh so you claim I do shady prep work, nice. Who the f..k are you? to claim that. Did I do any fab work for you ? You seen my work?
You have no clue what you talking about... Also,Its obvious, that you did not have 1gen truck.
Here use your reading skills on official Tundra recall

    http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/acms/docservlet/Artemis/Public/Recalls/2009/V/RCMN-09V444-0123.pdf

I wonder if you know that 2gen truck is really old Tundra with new body.

    On the side note:
My only advice to people is to have their "rust" case establish with Toyota corporate. Toyota won't do anythign right now, but it will be easier to get frame replaced later even if truck moves outside the NE.
I got mine documented so when the recall comes in I have proof that Toyota was notified. :D

    :D
Don't go getting all thin skinned... who said you do shady work?

You probably did as good a job as anyone else could do...it's darn near impossible to get every spec of latent corrosion from an installed assembly before putting a top coat on it. But the fact is, you left a spot so it continued to rust under the thick layers of paint you put over it, your own photo is proof of that.

Best of intentions since, arguably, if you'd left it uncoated and washed it regularly it would just be surface rust and no pitting at this point. If you're still maintain there's penetration then put a hammer through it and take a pic!

So what if second gen is the same frame... if the rusting issues from the frame mfr. have nothing to do with frame design... it's the mfg. processes. It's perfectly possible those are fixed since the $25mil. lawsuit had to have settled something.

You continue to miss my point about that article... but then, you seem to be in a 'frame' of mind to be easily spun up by manipulation pieces like that.

This thread now reminds me of the one where the American guy tried to tell Canadians how the Canadian leasing system worked and would not beleive anything that was told to him because he had a predetermined idea about how things are , and that his view was the only possible correct one , even though he was , without a doubt , incorrect .
