Finished my NC CCW tests today

Today I finally got one step closer toward joining the ranks of those responsibly exercising their 2nd Amendment rights. I've been wanting to do this for a long time!

Now it's off to the Sheriff's office so they can fingerprint me and put my certificate under a stack of paper for 90+ days until I finally get my permit. Some counties here move much faster than others... I'm in a county that historically has been slower than most (but definitely not the worst).

I'm curious what others who have their conceal carry permit had to go through. I know some states won't issue a permit under any circumstances while others have laws making it fairly simple to conceal carry.

For NC there's a mandatory 8 hour class (with lovely video reenactments telling you why you shouldn't shoot someone who's running away or surrendering with their hands in the air) and a range test of 10 rounds each at 3, 5 and 7 yards. After that, at least in my county, is the ~90 day wait to process through the Sheriff's office.

At least once I get my CCW I'll be able to make purchases when I want without filing for additional permits (with 7 business day wait times) each time. And NC finally passed Castle Doctrine (to go into effect December 1, 2011)! Prior to this the law (still in effect today) was truly asinine... you could use deadly force to repel someone in the act of breaking into your home but once they are inside your home you can't unless your are imminently threatened with death, serious injury or sexual assault. Talk about encouraging shooting through doors/windows first and asking questions later!

 

That sucks... come to WYO and you don't have to have a permit

 

Here I just had to pay them $75 and get fingerprinted, no testing, they did not even give me a pamphlet or anything. About 2 1/2 weeks later it arrived in the mail. Sometimes I like this state Good luck and hopefully those 90 days will fly by.

 

I carry the "Gold Card" and have my HR 218 certification

 

California=Impossible!

 

A fine piece of legislation, IMO. It's still a pain to keep up with all the separate laws of each state but at least LEOs *can* carry when traveling. I'd much rather be surrounded by armed, off-duty LEOs than unarmed ones any day!

Sucks! Not to rub it in, but I think California provides a great example of what we must prevent from happening elsewhere. This is at least half of my motivation for getting my CCW. I want to be part of the statistics proving responsible, law-abiding citizens should be able to conceal carry and that blood won't run in the streets as a result of us doing so.

there is no Open Carry without a permit in GA like there is in NC if there was i wouldnt have bothered with the GA permit....

 

You need a bunch of different licenses and permits to even own a firearm here. CCW=no go.

Hawaii= the suck for guns.

My favorite are guys who get their permit in whatever state and start carrying with no training whatsoever.

Most important thing is arm yourself with some quality instruction from a reputable instructor, and of course practice often as you can.

In Arkansas, I took an 8 hour class (with lots of very important information about concealed carry), did a range test, then waited about 3 weeks.
The class provided the fingerprinting, and of course there was a fee, but its been a long time, so I don't recall what it was.

I have to renew the license every few years (I forget how often, 5 years?) with a trip to the range.

 

i got the same Florida permit you got with no training whatsoever....unless you count GA hunters ed class which was like 20 questions that were given to us before the test...

 

got mine a lil over a year ago...around when i turned 21...went to my local PD they did a background check (7 days) picked it up and went to my county sheriff's department and got my laminated card (lol) in 10 minutes. Cost = 25 bucks all together. Started carrying that day. No classes or anything required, but i have been shooting and hunting for a while...

 

i got my PA LTCF from Centre County they had quick turnaround got it in a little over a week including mailing time...i got mine right before they stopped issuing by mail in PA

 

So have you thought of taking any training classes?

Do you know how to reload from your weak hand only using your weak hand? Have you shot your pistol at night and do you know how to use a flashlight in conjunction with your pistol? Do you know the difference between cover and concealment?

 

i am fully ambidextrous and can load and shoot with either hand with equal accuracy i can chamber a round using the sights on my shoe single handed or anything else hard nearby like a belt around my waist etc if i had to id grab the slide with my teeth to chamber a round........im a poor college student so i dont have the luxury of "training" other than what i can read on the subject and my personal practice i do in the woods

yes i can shoot with a flashlight in the hand

yes ive shot at night and yes i know the difference between cover and concealment...

 

Then you're good to go.
