unplugged seat...airbag off light?

so i removed the passenger seat in my 05 access cab to install an amp.
when i put everything back together, the passenger airbag read "off" even with someone sitting there...will this re-set itself? Is there a fix for this or will it have to go to stealership?

yes of course I hooked everything back up...and switch is set to auto.

 

Disconnect the battery and reset the ECM maybe!?

 

I would check to make sure you reconnected both of the wire harnesses. If I recall correctly there is actually two under there. And if both are connected then disconnect your battery and wait a while and then reconnect it like was mentioned above.

 

actually there are 3 connectors under there...I checked again to make sure everything was plugged in, and I tried setting the key to off then back to auto...when I start the truck, with a passenger in the seat, the airbag off light still lights after a few seconds. There is no air bag warning light on on the dash by the speedo/tach though...
Not sure what could be wrong; I am going to have to pull the whole seat again I guess...The owner's manual says to not install any electronics like amps and stereos without 'checking with Toyota" or something like that...
One thing I thought of though...there is this bar under the seat, and I saw a thread about it on this forum, about flipping it over to make more room under the seat...I did this "mod" and now I wonder if that is what is scewing up the sensor...?

No such thing as coincidences... whatever you did, you caused the problem, so it has something to do with the connections.

Last week I pulled the passenger seat out of my '09 to carry a large dog crate. While the seat was out, the airbag warnings were all on. When I re-installed the seat, everything went back to normal with no problems. Nothing needed to be reset and the battery did not need to be disconnected.

If I were you, I would simply unplug and re-plug in the connections under the seat. Wiggle them around to make sure they're fully plugged in. It should work.

Edit: I couldn't tell you about the bar you reversed. Perhaps it doesn't allow full movement of the seat to actuate the sensor or something. I'd put it back in the original postion and see if everything works right.

 

I've reversed the bar in my seat as well with no ill effects.

You never said you did this stuff with the battery disconnected. Did you disconnect the battery and THEN do all of the plugging in? If not, disconnect the battery, unplug everything and plug it back in, then reconnect the battery.

 

Yep, everything you need to do is already in the thread.

Disconnect battery.

Check all connections.

Check seat bar sensor clearance.

Check any additional connections you might have dislodged while routing amp wires. But I'd expect that to throw a code. So I'd say your problem is at the sensor.

I tried disconnecting the battery, pulled the seat bolts and just flipped it up a bit, then I unplugged and re-plugged all the connectors, making sure they were tight. When I put the seat back, re-connected the battery and started the truck, I saw the passenger airbag light say "ON" when I was sitting there in the passenger seat...success? nope. shortly after the "ON" light came on, I shut off the truck and tried it again, and this time the light read "OFF"...something weird going on.
Moose: what do you mean by "check sensor bar clearance"?
as mentioned, I have flipped the bar around, so now there isn't alot of clearance between the seat cushion and the bar...could this be the problem?
How much "clearance" need there be?

 

Yes, it could be the problem.

You looked at that flimsy little weight sensor pad on the bottom of the seat right? There's not a lot to it and it appeared to me that "bubble pack" might be part of its construction.

So if it's bottoming out when you're sitting on it because you've reversed that bar, it might be detecting a "low weight child" condition instead of a "full size adult" condition.

Try putting the crossb bar you reversed back to the stock position. If that solves the problem, you're golden. Then get someone to help you measure how much displacement there is in the seat when you (or a heavy buddy) is sitting on it, and fab yourself up a custom bar that gives more clearance for your amp than stock, but still preserves the measured amount of clearance.

 

So, how did this turn out?

 

I still haven't gotten to it...! I plan to try again in the next few days...(I was at the cottage fishin' so airbag has to wait.

Update:
So I took the seat out...again...but I couldn't really figure out exactly which part was the sensor...I just fiddled with everything again, and then put it all back together...and had the same problem. I figured out that if I sit in the pasenger seat, and push down on the seat cushions with my fists while seated, the airbag will come ON. I really can't put the crossbar back to its original position, because the amp needs that extra room to fit...So the problem is definitely the bar peventing the cushion from going down low enough to activate the sensor.
Pretty frustrated.
I may have to move the amp to the driver's side, which is going to be a major pain in the ass! In the meantime, I can get the airbag to come on for my passenger by pushing down on the seat, and it seems to stay ON once ON.

 

i unplugged my seat belt chime on the tundra i had when driving around in big bend nat'l park. seat belt off light came on. It stayed off a few days after plugging chime back in but then seat belt on light came back on.

 

Some connectors have a double click connection. When taking apart you fight and do anything to get it to separate. So some connectors need to click in once, some need to click in twice. Just a thought
