Is this a good lift option from Toytec for my 01 Tacoma

bit of a newbie here I just got a nice 01 Tacoma V6 4X4 TRD Limited and I want to change the front and rear shocks and add 2-3" lift..I called up toytec and they quoted me $619 for all the following parts:

Is this a good setup and price? Am I miss anything or did they add anything on that I dont really need. Not looking to break the bank here.

 

Looks like the same set up that's been proven effective countless times on here. I'd say you're good except you might look at some extended brake lines. My rear end is lifted 2" and the lines are pretty tight at full flex.

 

OK so thats reassuring.. where do i order longer break lines? Would toytec sell those? Also for the price this option is more affordable, would it also be a good solution?? don't want to cut corners but don't wanna break the bank.. what would the pros and cons be for going with this method

your in MA! Where would you go to have these parts installed?

 

If you plan on wheeling it check the rear shock part number. The ones that usually come with the kit have minimal travel.

 

If it's a 4x4, no. "lugs" are how many lug nuts each wheel has. 4x4 and pre-runners have 6, 2x4's have 5.

As for, "is this a good lift?" I don't know. What are your intended uses for it? Mall Crawler? Trailer Queen? Occasional off-roader? Or a serious off-roader?

If you're going to do some more serious off roading (or even IMO, occasional wheelin') DON'T get spacer kits and add-a-leafs. Those, IMO, are for mall crawlers. All they do is make your truck higher for bigger manly tires. If you will wheel with it, you'll want added benefits of increased travel, etc... that come with other lift styles.

A good "minimalist" kit that will give you some added performance and height, go for the Bilstein 5100 adjustable shocks in the front and match that with 5100's in the back and either new shackles or better yet, a new leaf pack will get you 2.5" lift.

An all out IFS setup would be the Total Chaos 14" travel kit for the front, and custom leafs for the rear.

 

if you're somewhat handy with a wrench, you could do all that yourself. Most kits come with pretty good instructions, and this site has a wealth of knowledge, too!

 

I put them on myself and my truck rarely sees a shop, so i have no clue where you could take it.

Although I would suggest researching the installation of these parts and doing it yourself. It's good to learn how to work on your truck if you plan on wheeling and also saves a bunch of $$$$

And like I said go with your first option, I went the Spacer route (second option) and ended up with the bilstiens and eibach's in the end.

 

Also, IMO i think diff drops are useless. So id scratch that idea and maybe hold off on the AAL for now and save up for some deavers or the like.

 

well the diff drop isnt too expensive but what are deavies??? any chance you could teach me how to install this stuff... no half wit here.. just dont have the space to really get down and dirty under my truck if you know what i mean

 

Ok so I'm set on getting the 5100s... The truck will be more or less an on road truck with some occasional off roading for camping and such but with the winters up here being so harsh and NY and Boston roads being what they are I think you NEED a truck up here! what kind of leaf or shackle kit do I get and do I need any additional options for that.. should I also be setting the 5100's at a higher length for more travel?

 

With out any other fron suspension mods, you won't be getting any more total travel. Basically, you lower the A-arms (lifting the truck) giving you less down travel, but more up travel. Low profile bump stops are an easy way to squeeze a bit more travel out, but bottoming out with be much more harsh.

The 5100 "kit" from DSM I'm pretty sure the rear shocks are sized so that you can either keep the stock height, or (with a spring/shackle lift) get up to 2.5" lift without over extending the shocks. That's what attracted me to it so much. I'm not planning to lift my truck, much if at all...

As for a rear shackle lift, Toytec makes one for ~$90. They're basically just longer than stock shackels that give ~2" lift. Add-a-leafs are pretty cheap too, but I generally don't prefer them because they just make the ride stiffer. You might think about a custom leaf pack from Alcan or something.

I used to sport a '86 Turbo 4Runner. I set up the rear leafs with the top two leafs from a Mazda 2wd pickup, and the rest the stock springs. It gave a few inches lift, but mainly increased the travel because the mazda springs were so much longer. I got some OEM front spring mounts and welded them right in front of the old stock ones, and used 2 or 3" longer shackles = ~25" travel in the rear.

 

That top set with the 5100's looks like what i'm looking at. If you end up putting it on, i'd like to see/hear how it works for you.

Thanks for the link.. The term Deavies seems to be coloqual however.. Toytec and other merchants do not know a direct translation or application. I'm in eastern mass.. But don't be detered if I'm far from your recogmendarion.. Its a small state.. When scaled on a map the word 'Massachusetts' doesn't even fit in its bounderies. My usual mechanic in Waltham, Franks Auto, is great. So great and so busy he has no time to call me back so willing to be flexible on an alternative.

 

I have the same '01 Limited (Doublecab) Taco as you. I put on the ToyTec 3" front coil spacer and rear add-a-leaf about 6 years ago. Never had a problem with it and kept the stock Bilstien shocks. I'm running 285/75-16s on it now. No issues with rubbing. I don't do any serious off-roading with this truck anymore, so the lift was mainly to fit some bigger tires. It just depends on what you want to use your truck for.
