So I need to replace the brake shoes, pads, whatever. I've read that aftermarket usually perform better than OEM. I pose this question to TacomaWorld- Which pads do you prefer when changing them out? Also, I've done this before to the Taco and for some reason, I have a really bad problem with brake dust getting on my wheels. Any suggestions to remedy this? Thanks in advance!

I've had good luck with EBC and Hawk. Just buy good brands and make sure you don't get the tricky race stuff.

On the first gen there are some cheap brake upgrades. You can get the bigger brakes that came on some 3rd gen 4runners or even better are 1st gen Tundra brakes. They are pretty much a bolt on mod.

I have Tundra brakes on my '04. I also have a spare set of big 4runner calipers that I don't need anymore. The Tundra and 4runner use the same diameter rotor but the Tundra rotor is thicker. The Tundra calipers are also bigger than the 4runner, using bigger pads.

FYI, I just ordered some parts for the wife's Accord. EBC green pads and EBC rotors all around. Good prices at Summit Racing.

    EBC green pads FTW!

My brake rotors/shoes are about due for replacement too, I might look into the caliper upgrades... So you buy 1st gen Tundra calipers/rotors, and they bolt right in to the 1st gen tacos (I've got an '04 too)? nice.

There is a slight difference in the brake line. The fitting on the caliper side is different. And you will have to clearance the backing plate. Otherwise a direct bolt on. Later year (05-06 I think) Tundras had the biggest caliper, that's what I am running.

Very popular mod with 3rd gen 4runners, that can make sourcing used calipers pricey. You can get reman calipers from most auto parts stores, but there is a core charge. I've done this mod 3 times. My old '00 4runner RIP, my current Taco and my friends 04.

If you search 4runner boards there is a ton of info on this.

link to tundy brakes on tacomas.

Gotta have 16"+ wheels, some wont fit depending on their shape...if you have the stock 5 star (TRD wheels) that also came on tundras you'll be fine there.

and yeah, all ya gotta do is modify the banjo bolt and reshape the dustshield.

Wow, I could see why some peeps would need this conversion but i would need to add some serious mods to the Taco first. Seeing as I'm currently unemployed, I am FAR from modding the shit out of my truck. One day in the not so far off future I hope to build a front and rear bumper but I would need to finish the suspension upgrade first. Thanks for all the replies and ideas, tho!
