component recommendations

Well, after picking out my head unit I'm now looking for a set of component speakers for my truck. I would really like a good quality set as I never have had anything but stock units in previous trucks. I am looking in the $500 range and am hoping this will be enough for something good. I am reading good things about the Boston pro series, but according to crutchfield the 60's will work modified but the 50's won't, I thought that was strange. I'd appreciate any help as I don't want to make any mistakes. Thanks

 

Big JL fan here... so no doubt I will speak for them. I've always been a fan of their 6.5 coaxials, and I ran a full set of the TR's in an old Prelude I had and had a few SQ gurus drueling over my setup.

If you really want to spend the money though, I can only imagine how the components must sound..... ZR series is their top of the line... in any setup though, don't forget the amp. Amps make or break your sound quality. I have a 300/4 ready to install here in a week or two.

 

It would be a serious help to know other aspects about the system you expect to install. For any answer to be meaningful you either need to know what I like and like the same thing, or have me (and others) know what you like so we can help with selections. Below are some questions I'd ask off the top of my head, but I'm sure I'm forgeting a lot of that could/should be asked.

Will you have a subwoofer, or do you need a component set with a good bit of bass kick (you might want to look at the JBL line if you don't plan on a subwoofer)

I presume you want a component set since the BA model you cite has a passive crossover, but would you consider an active crossover system? If you go active you can save the money that a good passive crossover adds to the speakers and go the DIY route (need 4-channel amp, more trouble to tune, but potentially much better sound quality for equal $$).

Do you like the highs to be crystal clear but some might think are a little harsh, then look for a metal dome tweeter set (the BA Pro set uses a metal tweeter), or do you like the sounds to be softer but with a bit less clarity (the Pioneer Premier Stage 4 component set stands out in this category - IMO).

If you are willing to tailor the tweeter mounting a bit , then the Alpine SPX17PRO line might be your cup of tea (ring radiator tweeters tend to be better when listened to on-axis; online prices are currently attractive).

There really isn't any substitute for listening to your potential choices and deciding what YOU like - after all I presume this is YOUR money that will fund this.

No matter what you decide I'd recommend looking at a component set and an amplifier. Aftermarket head units are a lot better than the stock one but none of them are going to get you the amount of power you'll want/need to really drive a good set of components.

 

are you going to do any sound deadening? what type of music do you listen to? even a good HU will have a hard time pushing component set

been listening to a lot of speakers lately... if I had that budget on speakers alone... I'd look into

both sound freaking great, Heard good things about morel too but never found a shop with a pair hooked up. Theyre going to need to be amped though.

 

I've listened to about 10 different sets lately (all on a soundboard however) and the two that sounded best to me were the Hybrid Audio Imagine series and the Pioneer Premier Stage 4s. For the money I really think it's hard to beat the HATs. Plus I really like that I don't have to worry about mounting external crossovers. Everyone's ears are different however.

 

Morel makes great speakers. I had a set of their entry level components before I switched to my MA RK6's. Sounded great IMO. They're alittle bright for some people but I loved them. They're quite power hungry though IIRC..

 

Wish there was somewhere around me that I could have a listen at the Massive RK6s, I've heard nothing but good things about them. Then again MA is known for outstanding quality it seems....

 

I don't know what they are going for now, but I picked up my set of RK6's for ~$170. At that price point, if you don't like them, someone else will buy them from you for real close to that.

In my opinion they're worth listening too, but they need A LOT of power to shine.

 

That, and a fair number of people are critical of their tweeter being too harsh. Although I've not heard them, my impression is that bi-amping them (or active) would solve a bunch, the tweeter seems not to be a good match power-wise to the midbass (send that much power to the midbass and the tweeter is screaming. I think that people who like the MA series but want to step up should look at the JBL components (top two models anyway, the 608GTI and the 660GTi).

But like I said above, the OP needs to know if he likes bright sounding systems. I must fall into the "can't make my mind up" camp since I'm going to start with one of the mildest metal dome tweets, the Seas neo-Aluminum dome (I do have the Vifa 1" ring radiators as well as CDT silk domes in the closet if/when I change my mind).

 

I wouldn't know how harsh they are on passive xovers - my passive's are still in the plastic wrap

That being said, they sound fine to me But they are pretty bright. The tweeters don't take to the power like the midbass do.

 

no sence in spending 500 on speakers unless you are pairing them with an amp. I would recommend JL c2 componets and a nice JL amp pushing 300/4

 

For an amp that won't break the bank take a look at the Vibe Audio Litebox 2. It's absolutely top notch for the price. It will push 80% of the components out there with ease. Good clean power and a small footprint.
