    Guys,

I bought the truck used and it was very well maintained. Fresh oil, transmission fluid clean, interior clean, engine runs smooth...

The transmission is very smooth when I'm driving. The changes from 1st to 4th gear are smooth, and I have no complaints.

But as the title states, when I'm changing the shifter from Drive to Reverse, or Park to Drive, or Park to Reverse, I feel a massive thump when it engages.

Could it be that my transmission mount is shot after 13 years, 174k miles?

Had anyone else had this issue? Did replacing the transmission mount correct it?

This guys advertises that this heavy duty mount will correct this problem. (4xInnovations)

    http://4xinnovations.com/p-TCC1326.html

    Anyone try this mount?

Like I said, the shifts while driving very smooth. The transmission fluid, pinkish/clear in color, and I have an appointment on Friday for a possible flush.

    Thanks in advance guys!

Are the rear leaf springs the originals. Sounds a lot like simple axle wrap.

As said above. And since Tacomas are rubber mounted trannys to the shifter, it tends to vibrate. Mine does this too i just got used to it. This is a common problem.

They are the orignal leaf, and they are extremely worn, basically completely flat, almost inverted.

I knew I had axle wrap since I get a massive clunk when I let off the brakes at a stop light. I just didn't know that it would cause the shifting to clunk as well.

Guess it's time to replace the leafs.

Whose replacement leafs eliminate axle wrap the best?

Well, most leaf packs you'll find will lift it some. So you might as well lift the front some with eibach coils and 5100s. Then you'll need some new tires to fill out the wheel wells and probably new wheels with less backspacing to keep those new meats from rubbing. Then you'll probably want some armor to keep from damaging your baby when you're wheeling and using all your new found offroad ability. Then you'll want a winch and lockers to go even farther with your new truck...

Welcome to the black hole that is modding your truck. "If you give a mouse a cookie..."

I really like my alcans. These will give about 2" of lift.

Sounds almost like classic axle wrap to me... Long, flimsy rear leafs = axle wrap, just about any additional stiffening of leaf pack will eliminate it.

Edit: An AAL might not completely eliminate it, but the addition of 2 leafs per side will, I guarantee it ....;)

OK well I am completely new to Tacomas, I just bought a 2002 with a 6'' fabtech suspension lift and 305/17 R16's Mickey thompson Baja ATZ's. This stuff is all new just put one. Well there is 2 things that I am noticing that the guy I bought it from didnt tell me and I didnt know better to catch this.(1) When I am at a light I feel the clunk when I let off the brake. so now reading forum this i know this is axel wrap. (2)I have and automatic tranny when I am sitting at a light I give it gas I can feel the shifter move. which makes me think that the transmission is shifting and i need to get a better transmission braket is this correct. So what is the best way to fix these issues. Is this normal when someone put this fabtech lift on this truck I hope i didnt buy into something that I will be totaly screwed

I'm just surprised that axle wrap could be the cause of the shifter thumps.

Has anybody tried these Fat Bob's 2.5" leafs?

Oh yeah... That axle wrap rears its ugly head at the damnedest times, consider that weak/soft springs are going to allow your axle to rotate forwards & backwards while slowing or when gas is applied too...

I definitely know that the axle wrap exists when I take off and stop,,,especially stop.

My big concern and reason for the thread was the shifter thump, when I am not driving.

(i.e.) When I turn the truck on in the morning, and shift into DRIVE for the very first time, it thumps into DRIVE. If I'm backing out of a parking spot, and I shift from PARK to REVERSE, it thumps.

I don't think this could be axle wrap, but a bad transmission mount instead.

I'm going to check out the local salvage yard this weekend for a leaf, and hopefully a temporary fix for the axle wrap.

But this shifter thump has to be the transmission mount, don't you all think? Is there a way to check if my transmission mount is bad, kinda like power braking to test a motor mount?

I have a little trouble believing its a broken or even a bad trans mount. There too many other more likely suspects. Is your slip joint dry? How about the u-joints? What is the condition of your carrier bearing. All of these items are more likely.

Maybe one option you have before you start throwing cash at this thump, is to crawl under there and observe while a buddy does the things that cause the thump. See if you see some movement where there shouldn't be any. Maybe hear the noise better.

    Ok..Dumb question time.

I was plannng on geasing all the zerks this weekend. Would that target the U joint and slip joint?

And where exact is the carrier bearing?

Good idea...I'll lay under there this weekend after I grease the fittings and have someone shift from P to D To R and see what moves

Grease won't fix a bad u-joint. While under the truck, grab the drive shaft and try to turn it back and forth and look for movement at the u-joints.

The slip joint is lubed with a zerk and is back in front of the rear diff. It may take a few pumps to get it lubed if it is real low.

The carrier bearing is in the middle of the drive shaft. It is the round metal with rubber inside bearing holding the drive shaft. Grab the drive shaft near the carrier bearing and push up and down to check movement.

    Thanks for this information.

I'm changing all the front/rear, and tansfer fluid this weekend to Mobil 1, and lubing all the zerks.

While I'm down thee I'll check all U, Slip, and Bearing.

I just read in the Haynes manual that you cna also just your transmission mount by placing a crowbar or some thing similar between the two plates and pushing up and down to see if there play in the rubber mounts between them. So I'll check this too and the engine mounts.

As for the grease, there a particular brand that's better than another. I bought Red n Tacky #2. Is there something better?

Red n Tacky is good. You will find a number of folks on here that use it with good results.

Checked the U joints, there wasn't any play in them.

I pushed up on the carrier bearing and it had about a 1/2" of upward play, maybe 3/4“ if I pushed really hard. Is that bad?

I'll lube the slip joint this weekend with the Red n Tacky.
