Begin rant.......Ok, so me and a co-worker both hold the same position under the same supervisor. He thinks he is the know all do all and apparently so does our superiors. It is soooooooo the opposite! Yesterday he was on vacation, I handled everthing just fine w/o him, nice smooth, quiet, uneventful day. Go in this morning and he is number 1 and I'm back to being number 2 as usual. He immediately starts running around like somethings wrong, (as I couldn't handle it the day before) which is normal for him. He has the short man complex btw. Nothing was wrong, but he seemed as if he wanted to find something, like I said, things cant run w/o him. Our supervisor was like calm down, nothings wrong. This kinda sh*t happens all the time and I am fed up with it since it seems that I don't get the respect I deserve. I feel like I'm looked at as I cant handle anything, but yet the ones under me cant stand him and say things like how smooth things are with me and vice versa with him. But apparently management doesn't see it that way. WTF? Even some new employees that have been there less than a month, so I've heard have said this. So why cant management see it? I change over some machines, no problem. Him, oh, we need maintenance, this thing isn't running right. I change out the grease bucket, bleed the line, no problems. Him, takes twice as long, 5-10 minutes later there is air in the line. I could go on. I call him "Murphy" in my head, you know "Murphy's Law". It just seems that everything I do and do it pretty good, he screws up, but yet he's the one that gets called on as if he can do it all. I just don't get it? But then there is more, him and our supervisor go back, back to high school, they have been hunting together, they go to lunch together sometimes, you get the picture. I'm not a suck up. So I guess I'm screwed. Me and my super have actually had this talk before as he tried to tell me I don't pull my weight! So I laid it out there and told him he favors him, to which he basically said I was crazy. Our job is not that hard, usually pretty quiet but has it's days. But basically what happens is I wind up doing oddball stuff while he is the super's right hand man, unless he's out then I handle things. I am always the one that get the short end of things and I'm sick and fricken tired of it. I go through these spells and just deal with it, and then some days it crawls all over me. Today was one of them days. Can anyone else with a similar situation give any advice in terms of the but buddy thing? Sometimes I just wish I could walk out the door, but I know jobs are hard to find and I know many people out there with more education and training are looking for work so that is not an option. I just don't know what to do. I'll probably just go on dealing with this just as I have for years now, but it feels good to rant! End rant.

Oh boy-been there done that my friend. You are NOT alone. Here's the bottom line-him and bossman go way back AND apparently, bossman seems to appreciate certain attributes this guy offers. You have skills that make certain tasks there a breeze. The "smooth time" you enable when you are in charge benefits you and your subordinates ONLY, and falls upon deaf brains upstairs. BE CAREFUL, this guy has the boss's approval and plus, he IS your boss. Until you achieve the #1 spot, don't EVER dis the guy above you-that will be all they see and you will be gone. Besides, no manager likes a guy who thinks he's better than the head guy-even if it's true..they just think you're a rat:( suck it up, respect the pecking order however f'd up it may be, and make your paycheck. Make changes or improvements in your off time to please yourself to offset the hell that is work.

I remember being in high school and seeing people unable to spell or pronounce words I had a firm grasp on when I was in elementary school. Then I worked fast food for a year.

Point I'm trying to make, idiots are everywhere. Quickly becoming the majority.

Yes I know and get what you're all saying and have been dealing with it for quite some time, it's just a rant. The irony is that this guy being buddy's with the boss and all, he will talk about him like a dog behind his back. I know he does this to me too. I really don't give a sh*t. But the point is as said above about the boss not liking someone showing them up, well that's him, he calls him out all the time for how he runs things and seems to think he's the one in charge. He is a real piece of work. I just don't get why the boss puts up with it. :notsure:

Like we say in the casino business where the buddy system is a HUGE norm, bull shit may get you to the top but it damn sure wont keep you there. Just try to keep your head down and ass up and do whats asked of you. Eventually you will have a chance to show your management your what your worth to the company.

OP-as others have said, this is all too normal. I say become friends with them out of work. Stifle your vomit long enough to become real close with the two of them. Really get to know them. Get to know personal things about them. Then, start to divide and conquer. Have them ready to kill each other. It may take a few months to accomplish this, but if you dont want to look for another job, this will kind of be a new job, and may get you what you want.

Have you put yourself out there for jobs in your field lately? I find a certain satisfaction(moral boost) in shooting out a Resume/CV.

I wouldn't be to quick to doubt yourself in the eyes of potential employers. There is a certain draw for an employer to hire someone currently employed in the field. Someone with more education/training, however, unemployed could be perceived to have some sort of baggage over someone able to retain a job in this climate.

Hope you get out of your funk!
