Def getting the Bilstein 5100's do I really need coil lift springs?

I more or less am satisfied with the hieght of my 01 Tacoma but I have to replace my shocks anyway and to gain 1-3 or so inches so that I can add P265/75/16's and for a sportier look appeals to me.


I've heard from some people that I should pair coil lift springs with the Bilstein 5100's... other people say I don't need them...Is the lift that significant and comfort to the ride it provides that worth the added expense and labor??? After all arn't they just compressing them so they can fit between the shocks? From the price toytec quoted they want $149 for a pair of the coil lift springs and another $100 to assemble them.


From what I understand a pair of Bilstein 5100 shocks front +bback and throwing an AAL in the back should be fine for my modest purposes and will not affect the differential, brake lines or steering enough to modify anything else (ie. brake, proportioning bracket, differential drop kit)

If the spring lift coils are that highly recommended I can break down and buy them, its not that big a deal but just don't want to be buying things I don't need, and I've been getting the feeling this one of them.. but not sure.

Btw as you can see from the tread in the pics i desperately need new tires now bad.. do you think I could put the p265/75/16 on the setup right now or should I wait till after install the bilstein 5100's I currently have p265/70/16

Your coils are shot you need new ones. I bet your hitting the bump stops going over small bumps.

You are right the bumps feel hard on my truck, poor thing... So it'll be a couple weeks before you can take them off? Damn I'll try to wait that long but it just sucks dealing with all these pot holes up here... maybe it'll be better to change them asap.. these washboard roads can shake even new cars loose.

So that I have a better understanding can you explain why my coils look shot? Also not sure about buying used parts.. sure sounds like a great deal and everything but who am I going to hold accountable if something goes wrong?

 

I can tell Your coils are shot because your UCS's (upper control arms) are sitting way higher then they should. they should be facing down a little not up. Also the coils are close together they should be more spaced out.

And as for buying my shocks and coils you can hold the manufacturer accountable hell I'll give you a copy of my receipt in case anything go's wrong and i highly doubt anything will.

 

I put the 5100's on my truck with springs that had 182k miles on them. They work fine. I set them at the middle notch (~1" lift) and have 265/70/17's with no rubbing at all. The 75's are a little taller, but shouldnt make too much of a difference.

Whether you replace your springs or not, you have to compress the spring to remove the front shock. The labor is the same, the difference is how much you pay for parts.

 

Not if he gets mine the top plate will be on and all that needs to be done is remove his shocks and install mine.

 

Boom, simple install!

 

I wouldn't doubt JLee, he pretty much pioneered the eibachs with 5100's for 3" of lift... or at least I didn't know about that combo before I saw his build.

 

I'm sure he's legit.. but not sure if its the best deal for me... i'm really only saving a couple hundred dollars on parts that have depreciated anyway.. not even sure i want a 3" lift.. could i be satisfied with the lift i get from the 5100's set at 2.5" and replacing the coils with stock?

I was gonna say "Holy Shit" ....Damn dude that coil looks like pretzel material, did you or someone else have that truck in the air ? (& i don't mean a lift..)

 

Hey it's your choice Like i said you have first dibs when they come off the truck. If you don't want them I'll post a thread and sell them to someone else it's cool.

 

Bilstien and eibach products will last though, While they aren't brand spanking new I would say they have depreciated, just been broken in. Hell the older they get the softer the ride gets so it could be right on the money for you.
