Just a quick question here guys, try searching through this thread but really didn't see any mention about it. What i'm wondering is, would it affect air flow if i put door screen over the hole for the snorkel at the top? I've been doing this for the past couple months to prevent bees, flies, cig butts, rocks etc from going down the snorkel. A good friend of mine seems to think that i'm losing approx. half of the air coming in because of this screen in place! Is this true? Should i remove it and just let my air filter catch everything?

Thanks for the quick reply! I think that looks pretty slick. Did you have to removal the grill on the snorkel? I don't have the removable one, so would that fasten right over top or the grill?

The door screen i'm using is definitely a lot thinner and not as restrictive as yours looks. But my friend was insistent that i'm restricting my air flow.

He compared it to Pro Street guys putting door screen across their rads to prevent bugs from hitting it, etc. but soon found out that they were over heating because of that.

    Thoughts?

Thanks for your thoughts Craig. And your grills look amazing, i'm tempted to order one. :D I know i'm not building up a drag car, but my friends thoughts made me think of it and personally i really don't think it effects anything. Wonder why more ppl aren't running a screen though? It definitely helps keep an excessive crap (bugs) from getting to the air filter...

If you read the literature Safari puts out they state water is separated by it hitting the original screen and then being distributed out the drain holes. I'm sure your getting less air the question is is it enough restriction to hurt anything....and that I can't answer or assume.

With that said many people run them turned backwards so nothing gets forced in the snorkel including air. I will be running mine backwards all weekend due to dust.

You can always throw a nylon stocking over it, but some mesh, buy a pre filter, etc.

This is what one of the guys I know is running on his FJ. It's a pre filter made for the snorkel and it's also a water repellant.

You could put it on over the screen. It's held in place by velcro top and bottom. If you guys wanna run filters I would just grab a black nylon stocking from one of Lurry's pantie stealing raids and throw it over the air ram :D

those are the "old" style with the square back. Our heads are supposed to filter water better.

So after running for 2.5 hours in 95 degree heat at 75mph and watching the temp get up to 142degrees on the intake I figured that was enough of the exhaust wrap. So I took it off. Was driving around yesterday and started to notice the temp go up on the intake and a variance of almost 20 degrees with no wrap on. WTF? Well I have enough room at the front of the inner fender to get my hand in there (I have an ARB bumper on so the inner fender has been cut) Low and behold the rubber elbow from the snorkel to the inside of the engine bay has come partially off of the snorkel. Apparently the clamp did not get enough bite and I don't know when this happened. So everything a saw of the results with the wrap on are worthless.

At this point I am done F***ing around with it. I am going to tear apart the inner fender on Friday and reattach it, add some RTV to the connection to make sure it doesn't come off again, and be done with it.

Frickin pissed me off. What a waste of time.

The only good thing out of this... since it was basically running similar to a stock intake I guess we now see how hot some of the air is in that inner fender and how the snorkel is beneficial for bringing in that cooler air. But then again most everyone here knew that.

i already said that w/ the plastic intake tubing i bought, i'm normally seeing 5-6* difference from outside air to intake air temps. i've seen it go as low as 3*. only time my trmps rise above that is when i'm sitting still and the tubing starts to heat up.

Comparing my stock outside air temp versus what it says my intake air temp is I typically only see maybe 3 deg difference

Most of the time it is = to the outside air temp... :notsure: been that way since I did the install...

A small handful of select mods.

The device used is plugged into the OBD II and gets it's info. from the ECU just like a scangauge. Is it possible something is lost in the translation of data... Maybe? I will research more on the device end.

However in some of your reply comments you didn't see that I was speculating the 142 degree was caused by the wrap but after finding that the elbow came off the truck was actually getting the air from inside the fender not really the snorkel. I am of the opinion(with the way my truck is modified) that the air in the fender will be hotter then the outside air due to the engine bay heating it up that space(Solid ARB front Bumper, inner fender well trimmed removing the venting, and inner fender tie up to inner fender support leaving very little open space). Never said outside air temp was 142 degrees. And that temp was registered at a stop light after 2 hours on the highway.

How exactly could it slip off if over tightened? That doesn't make sense to me because on the other end of it where I have the exhaust pipe going it it is a royal pain in the ass to take off because the rubber holds on quite well. Is it the hard plastic to rubber that is different?

Since I do not know exactly when the elbow came off I can only start looking at the numbers again after I get it fixed. I am hoping that like others who have a scan gauge I will be within that 6 degree or less variance. Otherwise I would agree and say the device is flawed.

Where is your air temp gauge located now? Is it still near the grill? Or near the fan? If so it could be getting false readings as well.

I could also have an ECU issue and plan to get it flashed with my next visit to the dealer. I don't know if simply unplugging the fuse or battery for a bit will correct that.
