    Just curious.

I have been dealing with a bad knee for over 10 years. Actually it's been bad since I was a kid, but worsened.

I have a LOT of pain.

I honesly can say, when I'm not at work, I notice myself self medicating with alcohol.

I'm on pain management, but it's not working well. Just barely cover the pain.

MD is reluctant to prescribe more due to his worry about addiction.

what else have the MD done to help with your knee pain? Any procedures done surgically? How about physical therapy? Injections?

I kinda know this because I worked with an ortho MD. Try visiting a specialist to further evaluate your problem.

When it's cold out, I have a limp and pain from a fractured ankle that the Army never caught. It hurts every morning, but then goes away (as long as its not cold).

Compartment syndrome in both lower legs, had surgery then complications, couldn't walk for a few months, forced recovery=further injury etc.
I had daily pain, had to change my lifestyle, now not so bad.

I had terrible back pain, the chiropractor has almost fixed all of that.

Migraines for years, finally got rid of those also.

I hate meds, I just deal with the pain :(.

Yea you should see a different doctor or see a specialist, orthopedic doctor probably. I'm a registered nurse and we are taught that there is no such thing as addiction to pain medication if you are in pain. There are such doctors out there that specialize specifically on pain management and have clinics that just only deal with pain. But maybe you need surgery on it? Your doctor should not have to worry about you being addicted, he is making you suffer, and to me that is neglect.

Forgot to add I am on a R.A. program, stopping it before further damage.
Have pain meds, but side effects on them  so I deal with it. Soak in the garden tub when needed, and then try something else.

Back injury from Desert Storm. Acts up during weather changes (pressure swings). I manage it well with routine exercise. Haven't needed any meds or chiropractor for several years now.

When we get a sudden change in air pressure (low front or whatever), my R.Knee aches. I had reconstructive surgery on it 20 years ago, and I have some screws in it.

Sorry to hear about your chronic pain ER & others here as well. :(

Agree with posts...weather especially is an indicator for me. As far as the :rasta:...well I don't indulge but hey smoke em if you got em & bum em if you don't.

My left knee is spent, no medial meniscus since an instrustive reconstructive surgery (sports-related) in 1979, a couple of other scopes, now bone on bone contact, degenerative arthritis. I still stay active, go to the gym to ride a bike & elliptical & move it as much as I can. Keeping the strength up in the supporting muscles (quads & hamstrings) plus easy stretching helps a lot. Hell I even ski (no bumps), its not like I can hurt it anymore than it does...a couple runs & then hang out in the lodge works wonder for the spirit!

But...somedays it hurts bad & won't bend very well but on those days I try to focus on what I do have.... like ice & Ibprofren, Tylenol Arthritis or Aleve.... Insurance to go to the Orthopedic.... a gym membership, a good leg ... whatever it takes. I really try not to take even over the counter meds, but understand everyone's pain tolerance is different. Do what you have to.

Wish you the best in your situation for sure & hope you get relief soon!
