Mud tire advice request

My Tacoma is going to live in rainy Hilo, HI. What is the best 265/70/16 mud tire for my stock '03 Tacoma double cab TRD 4WD? Should I go 265/75/16? If so, why? I like the look of the BF Goodrich KM2s but for some reason they don't make them for 16" wheels. I am concerned about keeping my gas mileage as high as possible. I will, however, need tires suitable for wet grass and mud on the farm. I currently have Toyo, Open Country tires on.

Check out the goodyear Duratrac's I got decent mileage back when i had them

 

uhhhhhh..... they do make it for a 16" wheel noob. I am getting some 285's km2's for my tacoma soon.

 

I think I want to keep it 265. I don't know that I need to go wider (285). Thanks.

They make 265/75R16 KM2s... Its all you need..

 

They make KM2's for 16" rims, I have a set on mine- 265/75/16

The only mud tires I have experience with are yoko M/T's and these KM2's, and these KM2's are waaaaay better. (IMO) They're probably the best riding M/Ts you're gonna find and you wont see TOO much of a MPG loss because of them.

They're great around the farm, and I've torn up grass because of "too" much traction...
My .02 (Whatever you decide on, get some M/T's, grab some other BI tacos and lets go to Mana Road!)

 

Thanks Krimson & Cody. Ok, I'm now leaning toward 265/75/16 BF Goodrich KM2s but I'm curious if I'll experience any difference in ride quality being 10 mm or so higher. I'm inclined to just stay stock. I'm happy with the truck as-is. I'm a bit older too.

 

Without a lift, and just going from 265/70 - 265/75 your truck'll be very slightly higher but it'll hardly be noticable.
The KM2's on-road are louder than street tires, but compared to other M/T's theyre very quiet. They handle pretty good on-road too, just that you have to watch out in heavy rain on asphault. Since our trucks have no weight in the back, its easy to lose traction.
As long as you don't drive like a youngin, you'll be fine though

 

I'd go with the BFG KM2's hands down if I needed a Mud Terrain...its the most tested and proven by far!

i've read on other forums that the KM2s sidewalls can be prone to fail

oh...and i have a beef with BFG over their discontinuing the KMs...so my opinion may be slightly biased

 

Oh I see. I have heard the same of the km2 but alot of people swear buy it. I guess its kind of a toss up

 

X2 (based on the extensive research done by the 4x4 magazines... I have the Hankook ATm's and they are great AT tires...)

 

KMs need to be brought back. a lot of people dis them because of their "older" tread design. i have no problem with them looking "dated" as long as they work.

they are the only MT i would recommend if they were still available. i've put over 120k on the three sets i've had...about half tread left on my current set, with none available to replace them when needed

i'm going with Hankooks when i finally wear them out. i've wheeled with a guy who's got them and from what i saw, they work excellent.

 

i agree... some people just wake up on the wrong side of the bed..


OP i have heard the duratracs are a awesome tire. but i dont have any experience with mud tires.

 

Duratracs are decent in the mud. they do pack up quite a bit in my experience, but got me where i wanted to go. Excellent in snowy conditions! they seem to be wearing faster than i'd like though.
