After mid 2007,they welded a plate on the frame at the motor mounts to thicken the steel there because of the problem with the mounts/frame caving in. Yep, shitty DESIGN caused some owners to break the frame. I paid out of my pocket to have my motor mounts reinforced before it happened to me.

The previous gens didn't rust through in 2-3 years. Cost and weight aren't the only reason truck frames aren't made of stainless. There are other options to make the frame more resistant to rust.

Just curious....When did you have it reinforced, after 2007? Is that how you found out what needed to be done, when you found out what improvements they made? Either way, that was pretty smart to take care of that.

How long did it take for it to become a danger? Or to fail?

I don't remember when I had mine reinforced. It's probably been 3 years? It's not like Toyota announced it was an issue and stepped up to the plate to fix it-- they quietly made the changes. If you search, you'll find a thread on this site with pictures.

As far as the rusting of the frames and how long it took, you should be able to search for that too.

Honestly, all you can do is take the best possible care of your truck B.T. Don't spend all your time worrying about it. Read up on how to take care of surface rust and keep your frame clean and coated and you'll be better off than many owners. After all, this truck is fun to drive :)

Resell value though would be through the roof. Depending on gold futures, it could be worth double in 5 years.

Galvanizing isn't really an option either. It is very vulnerable to acids and salts. Also it has the potential, like powdercoating to rust under the protection and not be seen until a large area rusts and then the protection flakes off. Even if you stripped your truck to the frame, sand blasted it, and linex'd it you would have to periodically check for rust because even linex is going to wear down eventually. Only now the rust is potentially under 1/4 inch of linex.

Periodic inspection and maintenance is the best you can truly do. Check your frame out ever oil change. Invest 30 bucks in a sand blaster and some black paint. See some rust, blast it, then paint over the bare steel. Don't paint over the rust hoping it will go away or you will just have bigger headaches later in life.

I am no expert so I could be off, but this is why I was thinking about that hd clear coating over the factory finish (for those of us whose frame frame is in good enough shape to lightly scuff and paint). You could sponge brush it on thick (spray where you can't reach) and it would certainly add protection but would not hide any future rust as it is clear.

 Galvanizing is an option to make the a vehicles frame better resist rusting. People do this with classic cars all the time. It would be an option to manufacture a truck that way, but no automatkers that I know of do this. Nothing, including stainless is 100% rustproof.
