Tailgate theft....How to prevent it....

    The clamps that most use on this don't have screwdriver slot and the nut is 5 sided so hex bits and sockets won't be too speedy either. The clamps have a plastic key so you tighten it with the key without breaking it then you get some pliers on it or vise grips and give it some extra. If you have cable washer mod, a popnlock, hose clamp and gatekeeper stainless steel over the hose clamp then as has been stated, they will move on to easier pickins.........

    Here's a modified version of the old SAE #20 clamp mod. All I did was to take a piece of shrink-wrap, which is readily available at Radio Shack (comes in black and various colors), measured it for size and slipped the clamp through it. The shrink-wrap makes the clamp less obvious and also protects the paint from any abrasion.

    This is how it looks after the shrink wrap is heated. I just lit a wooden match and let the flame play on the wrap until it shrank around the clamp.

    I then placed the clamp around the tailgate and tightened it from beneath, with the tailgate closed, to make it a bit more difficult (and take a bit more time) to remove.

    really. i tried like 5 different angles. and i know it’s not that im to week. i have taken the one on dads tundra off a few times.

    When I joined this forum this is one of the first mods I did after I took my tailgate off in less than 10 seconds. I was surprised how pathetically easy it was. I was almost pissed that Toyota had not made an integrated locking mechanism/system as "standard" equipment.

    i really don’t see how you guys are getting them off in 10 seconds!! like i said above. i have tried like 5 times and each time spent like 5 minutes maybe there is something with mine idk about. (no there is nothing on ether side that i can see)

    I don't know what to say. I thought for sure I wouldn't be able to do it that fast but I did. Not sure what I'm doing that you aren't but I was stunned at how simple and fast these things could be removed.

    well i fill better that i’m not the only one.
    thats the only thing i can think of! but i have not really hauled anything that would. i have had a bail of straw, and some bags of dirt. and mower and stuff. but i can’t fill anything ether... o well. i think they will give up and move on. if they try taking it. at least i hope.

    Looked for the key-type clamps at O'Reilly today and they only had #12 and #28 or so. Had to go to AutoZone to find a #20.

    I just went ahead and put clamps on both sides of the tailgate. I know the one on the left doesn't do anything, but to a thief taking a quick glance, maybe it will help for them to think they will have to somehow pry off not one but two hose clamps.
