Can K&N Filters allow for more dirt ingestion?

Had an old service mechanic that hated the things. Truck I just bought had one installed by previous owner.

Would you keep it or return to stock and do that deckplate mod?

 

Return, use OEM paper filter and deckplate mod.

It's pretty easy to know, just look at the engine. Does it look "normal" or does it have a big, obvious cone filter type projection on it? If you haven't bought the KN than you haven't lost any money on anything and buying a new filter might make sense, but instead of the OEM paper I'd personally recommend an AFE dry filter. It'll last a lifetime and you can re-clean it, plus no oil to make things dirty.
I wouldn't worry about a broken engine or anything, think about how many filters KN has sold and how many people use them, don't you think you'd hear about critical failures if these filters were that bad?

I don't care so much for performance. I prefer LONGEVITY. So, I think I want this K&N crap gone.

 

So, do I have a K&N intake? Or stock? Someone help me understand what I'm looking at...

You're gonna have to change your sig, that there kn is a definite mod. Do you have the stock airbox also, if not you're stuck with finding a better cone filter. If it was stock you'd have a large plastic box in the area the cone is currently in. that's a little different from the KN Cold Air Intakes (CAI) I've seen, the rest of the intake track looks stock. The hole in the fender wall to the far left of your picture is where the stock airbox pulls in the air, if you look in your wheel well you'll see the vents.

I do not have the stock airbox, but why do you say I'm stuck finding a better cone filter? Why can't I buy a stock airbox?

 

You can, there should be plenty of members wanting to trade you their stock box for what you have.

Just tell them you feel awesome throttle response, butt dyno 14hp......... and oh yeah 1-2 mpg better.

 

i always thought K&N were at least better than stock

Get a pre filter sock for the filter, will help!
