My bumper build thread!

So I figured that I would make a thread of my bumper that I have been building, its not done yet but its getting there. This is the first bumper that me and my dad have ever built and it has taken awhile to build but every chance we get we work on it. But my plans are by the end of the week, it should be done besides paint!

It is made out of: 1/4" angle iron for the main bottom support, 1 3/4" square tube that is 1/8" thick, and the side support bars are schedule 40# pipe welded onto the 1/4" angle iron brackets bolted onto the frame.

1. Angle iron for the main support bolted to the frame with stock bolt location.

2. Painted everything black.

3. Two supports welded on ready for the top bar to be welded.

4. All welded on.

6. Here are the brackets that I made out of left over 1/4" angle iron, drilled two holes through it and the frame and bolted it on.

7. The side supports welded on and capped off with welds.

8. Got the angled side bars cut and welded on today, finish welding it on towmorrow along with a light hoop and light tabs.

 

Looks good Are you going to turn that piece of C channel into the skid mount?

You are going to paint it or powder coat it right? I think that would help it look more legit!

 

No sense doing that until it's finished. But I will say, there's nothing more fugly than a nice bumper that has rust all over it. It'll definitely look more legit once it's painted. I won't even take pics of some of my stuff unpainted since they always look "finished" once painted. It's the cherry on the ice cream. What I like about these types of projects is this...they start out looking like frankenstein, and the more that's done, it just starts to come together. Every fab project is like that.

Are you going to fill that front open area with a skid plate? With 2 or 3 holes for some air flow and looks maybe..? You could zap some tabs on and do a bolt on aluminum plate. The contrast of aluminum and painted steel always looks great together. I like to hear about father - son projects, that's cool.

 

For right now I am probably just going to rattle can it black untill I can afford some roll on bedliner so I can bedline the whole bumper.

Yes I am either going to plate it in, or I am going to tack on some black wire mesh over the holes. And I will probably make a skid plate bolted to the bottom of the 1/4" angle iron on the bumper. And I know what you mean about it looking unfinished without paint lol. But I had to roll around with it for alil bit just to admire my work. It will be painted soon though, after I weld on some light tabs on the light hoop.

you could easily add fog lights in the lower outside triangles and running lights in the center.

Yea I thought about putting lights in the triangle part but Idk yet. Deafently in the light hoop though, I should have that on towmorrow and painted if Im not to busy. I will post pics!

I've been lagging, big time ! I even have a welder sitting in my garage waiting for me, maybe if I quit working on 2nd gens, I'll get something done on my own truck ...

Painted it black and took the Taco out for some fun:
