Glad I found this thread.....I think:) Can someone sum up what needs to be done to re-grease the DS? I have a grease gun, just need the grease. Let me see if I can sum this up:

    1) Cold weather, use a GL2 based grease, warm weather use GL1. NO moly!!!
    2) 5 zerk fittings on the drive shaft of the 05+ Tacoma
    3) When adding new grease pump in the new until all the old is expelled.

Anything else?? I tried finding something in the service manual for where the zerk fittings are located, but could not find anything. Closest was this:

Just did mine about a month ago if you need any help. It was pretty easy to do. Just on the very front DS, you have to get the shaft in the right place so you can get to the zerk fittings. Also, a plate needs to be screwed off in the front area for it to be easier to get the zerk fitting. Let me know if you need help.;)

Hey I am going to use Mobil 1 Synthetic in all 5 of my zerks... No moly.

One Grease to Rule them all, screw messin around with 2 grease guns.

Anyone done this, is it cool. I've searched, seems to be different views.... but the consensus is NGLI #2 and as long as you use any type of grease it'll be fine. I also read that the use of Moly in the U joints will cause failure, so better to use non molly throughout, which will not cause failure anywhere.

Yup sounds about right!! Yeah I just went to my local auto parts store and got a multi-purpose grease and worked just fine!! Little tip though, you will see the old grease come out all black and I just kept pumping away until I saw the new grease come through wiping the old grease out of the way the best I could.

No moly...hmm. I went to Autozone and they gave me a grease that is NGL1 and is "moly fortified". It a Valvoline Dura-Blend grease. All the other grease they had was some variant of a lithium grease. I noticed in the manual it recommended a "moly" type grease. I also picked up one of these:

The Dura-Blend will work fine for anything that needs to be greased on a Tacoma.

Yeah, will work fine, but the manual states that you need NGLI 1 for the front thrust bushings while NGLI 2 for the back. It also states you can use either moly or regular grease for the rear. Also, do not use moly on Universal joints (Well that's waht I have read)

Plus, that pump you picked up is not a grease gun, it's for differential oil changes and fluids that flow easily. You will need a real grease gun.

I have a grease gun. I got the pump for the rear diff., transfer, and front diff oil change. What grease do you use for the u-joints then?

I am going to use Mobil 1 syn... but any NGLI 2 grease will work as long as it is non moly.

I have searched and read that the extended use of moly over time will cause it to fail.

Internet, so take with a grain of salt. Refer to manual.... I just don't want to use 2 grease guns and Synthetic grease exceeds the specs of regular grease so can't do it any harm ya know.

It's kinda like putting in Syn oil over Dino, dino is fine but Syn covers all your bases.

Ummm.....As I said I got it at Autozone. The brand is performance tools, which I think is an Autozone brand. I think it is just called a fluid pump? I have no idea what else it could be called.

I don't know what the hell to use now. Don't use moly, moly is ok. Which is it? The manual says use moly, but some folks are saying it is in error. Some garages use moly others stay away from it. What the hell is true? I don;t want to be replacing my drive shaft. I already have 52k on the truck and am 20k past the 30k maintenance. I really need to get this right.

hahhahaha... yeah.... bottom line, some grease is better than no grease.

Easy option that will not ruin your vehicle is to get a quality NGLI #2 Synthetic grease and grease everything with it. DONE

You wanna be anal, get two guns and follow the manual with NGLI #1 in front, NGLI 2 in the back, no moly in the U joints.

If you read the manual carefully is states, NGLI 2 Grease OR Grease with Moly.... so you can use either... so to keep things simple, just don't use moly.... doesn't matter at all. Clear as mud??

Well I picked up a tube of Mobil1 Sythetic Grease. It did not say it was NLGI#1 or #2, but it is not moly so I assume I will be fine?
